Enable Pop Access on Outlook.com to read your email offline

To use Outlook.com offline, enable your Outlook.com account to allow POP email downloads. POP is not enabled by default, but you can enable it in your Outlook.com settings.

The POP mail server allows the e-mail program or application of your choice to download your Outlook.com messages. After you set up Outlook.com email in your email client, the POP server can download Outlook.com messages and display them in a standalone desktop or mobile email client.

How to access Outlook.com via POP in an email program

To allow email programs to connect to and download messages from an Outlook.com email account using POP, you must access the POP and IMAP sections in your Outlook.com account settings :

  1. Click the gear icon Settings at the top right of the Outlook.com screen.

  2. Select View all Outlook settings at the bottom of the panel that opens.

  3. Select mail in the left pane of the settings screen and select Sync Email Category

  4. Scroll down to the section POP and IMAP

  5. Select Yes In chapter POP options to allow devices and apps to use POP.

  6. Once POP is enabled, a new prompt will appear asking if devices and apps can delete messages from your account. Select Not allowed if Outlook prefers to keep messages even after they have been downloaded by the client. It puts them in a special POP folder. Select else Allow apps and devices to delete messages if you prefer this option.

  7. Click Save at the top of this page to confirm your changes.

The POP server settings are listed along with the IMAP and SMTP settings at the bottom of the POP and IMAP section. These settings are necessary to set up access to Outlook.com from other applications.

Connect to Outlook.com email with POP

These general instructions work with almost any email client. Enter information when prompted when setting up your account.

For a flexible alternative to POP that provides access to all folders and sync activities, Outlook.com also offers IMAP access.

These settings are required to download messages to the client program.

  • Server: pop-mail.outlook.com

  • User name: Your full Outlook.com email address (example.outlook.com or example.hotmail.com, no alias).

  • Password: Your Outlook.com password

  • Port: 995

  • Encryption method: TLS

  • Requires TLS/SSL encryption: Yes

SMTP email settings in Outlook.com

Use these server settings so that you can authorize your email client to send email on your behalf.

  • Server: smtp-mail.outlook.com

  • User name: Your full Outlook.com email address

  • Port: 587 (try 25 if it doesn’t work)

  • Password: Your Outlook.com password

  • Requires TLS/SSL encryption: Yes

  • STARTTLS: yes (try SSL or SSL/TLS if not available)
