Create background image in Outlook with stationery

Decorate your Outlook email with a background image. Apply a background image to an individual email or use the built-in themes to apply the same background to every email you send.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook for Office 365, Outlook 2019, Outlook 2016, Outlook 2013, Outlook 2010, Outlook 2007, and Outlook 2003.

Add background image to a single message in Outlook

To add a background image to a message you’re composing in Outlook:

The background image only applies to the current message box.

  1. Go to the tab Text format and in the group Format select HTML or rich text .

    If you’re sending email to people who don’t use Outlook, use HTML instead of rich text.

  2. Place the text cursor in the message area (instead of a header field like Subject).

  3. Go to the tab parameters: .

  4. In Group Themes select Page color .

  5. Select Fill Effects .

  6. In the dialog box Fill Effects go to tab Image .

  7. Select Choose photo .

  8. Choose where the image file is located. You can insert a picture from a file to your computer, to cloud storage A disc or from Bing image search on the Web.

  9. Select an image and then select Insert .

  10. Select Okay to insert an image.

Use the blank to add the same background image to all posts.

Stationery can give your email messages a uniform look because they all have the same background. You only apply the stationery once and it will appear as the background of all your outgoing email messages.

HTML should be used as the message format for the stationery application.

  1. Go to the tab File and choose parameters: .

  2. In the dialog box Outlook options select mail .

  3. Select Stationery and Fonts .

  4. In the dialog box Signatures and forms go to tab Personal forms and choose Subject .

  5. In the dialog box Subject or form go to list Choose a theme and choose a theme. A preview of the letterhead, font colors, and graphics is shown in the Sample theme .

  6. Select the attributes you want to apply, such as: Active images and background image .

    Administrative-only options have no additional options.

  7. Select Okay to apply the form.

Add a fixed background image to emails in Outlook 2003

You can add a background image from your computer to a message in Outlook that doesn’t scroll with text, but is pinned to the canvas.

  1. Download the following file to the office supplies folder: zfixedbgimg.htm.

  2. Open notepad. Select File > Open and navigate to the downloaded file to open it in Notepad.

  3. To replace ### background image file path ### to the path to the image on your computer that you want to use as the background image. It may look like , For instance.

  4. Save the file in Notepad.

  5. Select in Outlook Actions > New email message with > Additional forms .

Customize the appearance of the background image by adding styles to the BODY tag’s style attribute.
