Hear a beep when new Gmail messages arrive
When you use Gmail.com, new messages do not trigger an audible notification. There are several ways to get the Gmail notification sound, but the method you choose will depend on how you open your email.
If you’re using Gmail through a downloadable email client like Microsoft Outlook, Thunderbird, or eM Client, you’ll be making audio changes from those programs.
Gmail Popup Notification
You can set Gmail to show pop-up notifications when new emails arrive in Chrome, Firefox, or Safari while you’re signed in to Gmail and have them open in your browser. Just enable this setting in Gmail Institutions † General † Desktop notifications † Notification not accompanied by sound † If you want to hear the new email sound when using Gmail with a web browser, you can, but not in Gmail itself.
Enable new email sound for Gmail
Since Gmail does not natively support sending sound notifications via a web browser, you will need to install a third-party program such as Notifier for Gmail (Chrome extension) or Gmail Notifier (Windows program).
If you use Gmail Notifier, you may need to allow less secure applications to access your Gmail account before the program can successfully log in to your account. You also need to make sure that IMAP is enabled in the forwarding and POP/IMAP settings.
If you are using Notifier for Gmail Chrome extension:
Right-click the extension icon next to Chrome’s navigation bar and select parameters: †
Scroll down to the Notifications section and make sure: New Email Notification Sound †
Change the sound using the drop-down menu.
Exit the window when you’re done. Changes are saved automatically.
If you are using Gmail Notifier for Windows:
Right-click the program in the system tray and select Institutions.
Make sure the option Sound notification enabled.
Click Select sound file to select a notification sound for new Gmail messages.
Gmail Notifier only supports the use of WAV files for sound. If you have an MP3 or other type of audio file that you want to use for your Gmail notification sound, run it through a free audio file converter to save it in WAV format.
This is a great way to know when you have new emails!
How to Change Gmail Notification Sounds on Other Email Clients
For Outlook users, you can enable notification sounds for new email messages in the menu FILE † parameters: † mail through Play sound in the “Message” section. To change the sound, open the control panel and search for “sound”. Open the Sound Control Panel applet and change the setting New Email Notification on the Sounds tab.
Mozilla Thunderbird users can follow a similar procedure to change the sound of the new email alert.
For other email clients, look somewhere in the Settings or Options menu. Don’t forget to use an audio file converter if your notification sound is not in the correct format for the program.
