Add an Excel chart to a PowerPoint presentation

Charts add a little extra spice to your PowerPoint presentation instead of displaying data markers. Conveniently, charts created in Excel can be copied and pasted into PowerPoint presentations. As an added bonus, update the charts in your PowerPoint presentation when you make changes to the original Excel data.

The instructions in this article apply to PowerPoint for Office 365, PowerPoint 2019, PowerPoint 2016, PowerPoint 2013, PowerPoint 2010, and Excel.

Copy your chart from Excel

Any chart created in Excel can be copied and pasted into any Microsoft Office application.

  1. Open the Excel file that contains the chart you want to copy and select the chart.

  2. Select House > To copy .

    There are other ways to copy a chart. Right click on the chart and select To copy . Or use the label ctrl + C .

  3. Close Excel.

Select How you want to insert your chart

The chart you copied to Excel is saved to the clipboard. Now it’s time to insert it into your PowerPoint slide.

  1. Open PowerPoint and navigate to the slide where you want to insert the Excel chart.

  2. Select House and select Insert arrow down. Or right-click on a slide. Various options for inserting a map view.

  3. Select Use destination theme and embed workbook to insert the chart into PowerPoint so that it can be edited in PowerPoint to match the presentation’s color scheme.

  4. Select Keep original formatting and embed workbook to be able to edit it in PowerPoint and keep the original color scheme from Excel.

  5. Select Using theme and link data to change it by making changes to the original data in Excel. The chart matches the color scheme of the PowerPoint presentation.

  6. Select Keep original formatting and link to data to change it by making changes to the original data in Excel. The chart retains the original color scheme from Excel.

  7. Select Image to insert an image of your chart into PowerPoint. The photo cannot be edited and is not associated with any data.

Update Excel charts in PowerPoint

If you choose to link data when you insert an Excel chart into PowerPoint, changes you make to the original spreadsheet file will update the chart in PowerPoint.

To update map data manually:

  1. Select a chart in PowerPoint.

  2. Select Chart Tools Design .

  3. Select Update the data .

Microsoft Office Update Prompt

Every time you open a PowerPoint presentation that is linked to another Microsoft Office application, such as Excel or Word, you are prompted to update the links in the presentation file. If you trust the presentation source, select Update links . All references to other documents will be updated with any new changes.
