Add a running story or only comments in certain places

Let’s face it, no technical skill can save a bad speech, but a dynamic PowerPoint presentation can spice up an already good lecture. The app has a lot of tools to help you get out of your bulleted comfort zone and try something new. An audio recording of your voice or other sound effects can bring your theme to life, and it’s very easy.

Here’s how to add sound to PowerPoint slides.

Remark † The instructions in this article apply to PowerPoint 2016, 2013, 2010, and PowerPoint for Mac.

Add audio to PowerPoint 2016, 2013, or 2010

These instructions are based on PowerPoint 2016 with minor differences between the 2013 and 2010 versions.

PowerPoint 365, also known as PowePoint Online, does not include the ability to add audio elements.

  1. Highlight the slide where you want the audio to begin.

  2. Select tab Insert † In Group Media select audio

  3. Select Sound recording

  4. In the dialog box Sound recording replace the example name in the field Name with your own.

  5. Select Record indicated by a reddish dot, to record your voice.

    You can use the microphone on your computer or the one you have connected to it.

  6. When you’re done recording, select Stop marked with a blue square.

  7. To listen to the recording you just made, select Play indicated by a blue arrow to the right. If you are not satisfied with the input, select again Record to record new audio.

  8. Select Okay

  9. The audio icon and controls appear on the slide.

    You can move the soundbar anywhere on the slide.

  10. You can set whether the sound is played automatically or with a mouse click:

    1. Select on the slide with the item on it audio icon to access the audio tools.

    2. To enable audio playback automatically, go to the tab Play † Then in a group Sound options select the drop-down menu next to Get started.

    To check this setting, go to the tab slideshow † In Group slide Show select First † Your presentation will play from start to finish, including the audio element.

  11. If you want your recording to play throughout your presentation, follow the steps above on the first slide of your presentation, then:

    1. Select audio icon

    2. Select tab Play

    3. In Group audio styles select Playing in the background

    In PowerPoint 2010, select the Play † Then in a group Sound options pick list Get started select Play through slides

    To check this setting, select the tab slideshow and then in the group Start slideshow select First † Your presentation will play from start to finish, including the audio element.

  12. To use an item you’ve already saved as a file, follow steps 1 and 2 above, then:

    1. Select Audio on my PC

    2. Navigate to the file you want to paste.

    3. Select a file and then select Insert

  13. To remove an audio element, select audio icon and then click remove on keyboard.

Add audio to PowerPoint for macOS

You can also easily add audio to PowerPoint presentations with macOS.

  1. Highlight the slide where you want the audio to begin. Click Insert audio

  2. Select Audio from file , then navigate to the desired file and select it. The audio icon and controls appear in your presentation.

  3. To listen to the sound, click Play

  4. On the tab Audio format select the desired options.

    • If you want the sound to play when the slide reaches the presentation, click Get started and then select automatically

    • To start the audio manually, select When you press

    • If you want the sound to play throughout the presentation, check the box. Play through slides

    To use this option, your audio must appear on the first slide of your presentation.

    • If you want the recording to be played again after it ends, check the box Bike to stop

    If the check box Play through slides deleted, the recording will only repeat if the slide is on; If checked, the recording will repeat throughout the presentation.

  5. You can also change the appearance of the audio icon on the tab Audio format

  6. To remove an audio element, click audio icon and then click remove on keyboard.
