Put some personality in your words
You can add fonts to Word on Windows, Mac, Word Online, and mobile versions of Word. All versions of MS Word support this feature, but to use it in Word, the font must be added to the operating system.
Install a font in Windows
Let’s learn how to install a font in Windows so that we can add it to Word; Installing the font on Windows is the same as on Windows 10 through Windows 7:
Press the button Get started † Control panel † Fonts to open your system’s fonts folder.
In another window, locate the font you want to install. If you downloaded the font from a website, this file is probably in the folder Downloads † The font file will most likely have a .ttf or .otf extension.
Drag the desired font into your system’s fonts folder. You can place it in any empty space between other font icons in the Font Control Panel.
Remark † Font sets are often contained in .zip files, so they must be extracted before the actual font files can be dragged into the folder Fonts your system. For instructions on how to extract or extract a ZIP file, see Zip Files: Extract Them Using the Appropriate Software. If the .zip file contains multiple font options, you must install them all separately.
Once the font is in the correct folder, it should be installed automatically. If not, double click the font file to open the font viewer and click the “Install” button in the top left corner. The next time you open Word, the new font should appear as an option in the font list.
Add fonts to Word for Mac
Before you can use the new Microsoft Word fonts on Mac, you need to add them to the font manager app on macOS. Font Book †
Locate the font file and double-click it to open the font preview window. You may need to extract the file first.
Click “Install Font” at the bottom of the font preview window. Will open font book †
If you’re using the 2011 version of Office for Mac, you’ll also need to drag and drop the font file into the Windows Office Compatible collection, which can be found in the left sidebar Font Books †
After you restart your Mac, the font should be available in Word and most other applications, including PowerPoint and Excel.
Remark † Fonts display correctly in Word only if they are installed on the user’s device. Text formatted with unsupported fonts usually appears in the default font, such as Times New Roman. If you plan to share your Word files with others, you may need to embed some fonts. You can only embed fonts in the Windows version of Word , and the specific font must allow embedding. Review the list of Microsoft fonts supported by each version of MS Office to determine which fonts you may need to embed.
Add fonts to Word Online
If you use Microsoft Word Online as part of Office 365, you can use any font installed on your system. Just type the name of the font file without the extension in the font options field.
When the document is saved, the name of the font appears in the font options window and is displayed correctly for all users who have that font installed on their device. Unfortunately, Word Online doesn’t allow you to embed fonts.
If I add fonts in Word, will they be transferred to Excel or PowerPoint?
Yes. Once you add a font to your operating system and make sure it’s compatible with Word, you can use it in any MS Office application, including Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
Add fonts to Microsoft Word for Android
Unfortunately, adding fonts to the latest version of MS Word for Android is much more difficult than it used to be. Before you start, you will need root access to your device. Lifewire has a detailed guide explaining how to root any Android device.
Remark † Rooting the device may void the warranty and cause hardware failure. Before rooting, back up your important data with an app like Helium.
Download FX File Explorer from your rooted Android device and install the root add-on.
Open FX File Explorer and locate the font file.
Select the font file by holding it for a few seconds and then press To copy in the top right corner of the screen. If successful, you will see a new icon in the top right corner that says “1 copied”.
Now close FX File Explorer, locate the MS Word application and hold your finger on the file icon to open the popup menu. If your device is rooted you should see an option Explore data in addition to Open and remove †
Click Explore data and find the font folder by going to the section files † data † fonts †
Paste the font file into the font folder by touching and selecting the “1 copy” icon in the top right corner of the screen Insert in the menu that appears.
The font now appears as an option in MS Word.
Add fonts to Microsoft Word for iOS
To add a font to an iPhone or iPad, you need a font installer app, such as AnyFont, which you can download from the App Store.
Move the desired font file to your iCloud. For information about moving files from one place to another on your iPhone, see Use the Files app on your iPhone or iPad.
In iCloud, click the font file, then click the ellipsis in the upper-right corner of the screen.
Select Export in the drop-down menu to open the iOS menu.
In the iOS menu, click Open in and choose Import from AnyFont †
When AnyFont opens, you should see your font file. Click on it and then click on the large Aa icon. If the font does not launch immediately, click to install on the next screen that appears and follow the instructions.
When you restart MS Word, you should see your font in the list of font options.
