Customize your spreadsheet to easily manage large amounts of data

Spreadsheets are made up of columns and rows, and to use them effectively, it’s important to know how to customize them to include the information you want to track or the data you want to manipulate. If you’re using Google Sheets, it’s really easy to make changes to the columns you use. Here’s how it’s done:

Add Columns to Google Sheets

Let’s say you’re working with some data and you see that an extra layer of information would be helpful. You can add a new column for this.

  1. Open Google Sheets as usual and open the spreadsheet you want to add columns to.

  2. Decide where you want your column to be and hover over the letter at the top of one of the columns next to it. For example, here we want to add a column between D and E, so we hover over E .

  3. Click on the one that appears arrow to open the menu.

  4. Select Place 1 left or 1 insert right depending on where you want to place the new column.

  5. A new column will appear that you can fill with your data.

If you want to add more than one column, decide where you want the columns and select the same number of columns next to them. Click the menu arrow at the top of one of the columns and select Insert X Left or Insert X to the right (X is the number of columns selected).

  6. The new column and data will become part of your spreadsheet.

Delete columns in Google Sheets

Suppose the new column doesn’t work and you want to delete it.

  1. Open Google Sheets as usual and open the spreadsheet you want to remove the column from.

  2. Hover over the letter at the top of the column you want to delete. Here we want to delete column E, so hover over it E .

  3. Click on the one that appears arrow to open the menu.

  4. Select Delete column . The column will disappear.

To delete more than one column at a time, select the columns you want to delete, press the menu arrow and select Delete XY Columns (X and Y are the first and last highlighted column).

  5. The two columns on either side of the deleted column are now side by side.

Hide columns in Google Sheets

Instead of permanently deleting a column, you may only want to temporarily look at data without that column. In this case, you can hide the column.

  1. Open Google Sheets as usual and open the spreadsheet where you want to hide the column.

  2. Hover over the letter at the top of the column you want to hide. Here we want to hide column E, so hover over it E .

  3. Click on the one that appears arrow to open the menu.

  4. Select Hide column . The column will disappear.

  5. You will see arrows in the columns on either side to indicate that there is a hidden column. To display a column, click on one of the shooter .

Freeze Columns in Google Sheets

In a spreadsheet, the first column is usually used for the identifiers of the information in subsequent columns. In our example, the first column (column A) identifies the salespeople, and the numbers in the rows next to their names represent the sales numbers for each month. If you have a large number of columns, you may want to look at the columns that are not currently on your screen, leaving the first column open so you can see the ID. The method used is called freezing. Here’s how to freeze columns.

  1. Open Google Sheets as usual and open the spreadsheet whose column you want to freeze.

  2. Select at the top of the screen Vision and hover over it To freeze .

  3. Select the number of columns you want to freeze. In this example, we will stop only one column.

  4. You will see a gray bar between frozen and unfrozen columns. This means you can view information in unfrozen columns without moving the frozen columns.

  5. Select . to lift the freeze Show > To freeze > No columns .
