Adding a hyperlink to a PowerPoint slide — text or image — is easy. You can link to many things in a presentation, such as a slide in the same or another PowerPoint presentation, another presentation file, a website, a file on your computer or online, or an email address.

You can also add a hint to a hyperlink. This article covers all of these possibilities.

Add a hyperlink to another file on your computer or network

You are not limited to creating hyperlinks to other PowerPoint slides. You can create a hyperlink to any file on your computer or on the network, regardless of which program created the other file.

Two scenarios are available during a slideshow presentation.

  • If the hyperlink goes to another PowerPoint presentation, clicking the link opens that presentation and makes it the active presentation on the screen.

  • If the hyperlink points to a file created in another program, clicking it opens the file in the associated program. This is the active program on the screen.

How do you create a link?

  1. In the dialog box Edit hyperlink Select option An existing file or web page

  2. Find the file on your computer or online that you want to link to and click to select it.

  3. Click Okay

Hyperlinking to other files can become a problem later on. If the linked file is not on your local computer, the hyperlink will be broken when you play the presentation elsewhere. It is always best to keep all the files needed for a presentation in the same folder as the original presentation. This includes any sound files or objects associated with this presentation.

How to create a hyperlink to a website

To open a website from a PowerPoint presentation, you need the full Internet address (URL) of the website.

  1. In the dialog box Edit hyperlink Enter the URL of the website you want to link to in the text box The address:

  2. Click Okay

If the web address is long, copy the URL from the web page’s address bar and paste it into the text box instead of typing the information. This prevents typos that lead to broken links.

Hyperlinking an email address

A hyperlink in PowerPoint can launch an email program installed on your computer. The hyperlink opens an empty message in your default e-mail program with the e-mail address already inserted in the line To who:

  1. In the dialog box Edit hyperlink Click E-mail address

  2. Enter an email address in the provided text field. When you start typing, you may notice that PowerPoint inserts text mailto: before the email address. Leave this text as you need to tell the computer that this is an email hyperlink.

  3. Click Okay

Add a hint to a hyperlink on a PowerPoint slide

Screen tips add additional information. A screen tip can be added to any hyperlink on a PowerPoint slide. When a viewer hovers over a hyperlink during a slideshow, a tooltip appears. This feature can be useful for specifying additional information that the viewer may need to know about the hyperlink.

To add screen tips:

  1. In the dialog box Edit hyperlink Press on the button Pop up hint…

  2. Enter the on-screen prompt in the text box in the dialog that opens Set Hyperlink Hint

  3. Click Okay to keep the tooltip text on the screen.

  4. Click Okay again to exit the dialog Edit hyperlink and apply the hint on the screen.

Check the hint on the hyperlink screen by viewing the slideshow and hovering your mouse over the link. A prompt should appear on the screen.
