Add music or sound to a PowerPoint presentation

Save audio or music files to your computer in a format that can be used in PowerPoint, such as MP3 or WAV. Add these types of sound files to every slide in your presentation. And then make sure the sound plays the way you want it to.

The instructions in this article apply to PowerPoint 2019, PowerPoint 2016, PowerPoint 2013, PowerPoint 2010, PowerPoint 2019 for Mac, PowerPoint 2016 for Mac, PowerPoint for Mac 2011, PowerPoint for Office 365, and PowerPoint for Office 365 for Mac.

Add audio files to a PowerPoint presentation

Use sound to enhance your presentation. Choose a background sound that sets the mood or play a recording of your voice to talk about your presentation.

  1. Select the slide to which you want to add audio.

  2. Select Insert

  3. Select audio

  4. Select Audio on my computer to open the Insert Audio dialog box.

  5. Navigate to the folder containing the audio file you want to insert.

  6. Select an audio file and select Insert † The sound file icon is in the center of the slide.

Explore and test the sound or music on a PowerPoint slide

After you insert a sound or piece of music into a PowerPoint slide, a sound icon appears. Use the controls on the sound icon to listen to the audio file.

  1. Select the Sound icon on a PowerPoint slide to display the sound controls.

  2. Select Play pause to switch between play and pause mode, depending on which one you are currently using.

  3. Select Go back to rewind the sound 0.25 seconds.

  4. Select Moving forward to fast forward the sound 0.25 seconds.

  5. Select Mute/Unmute to mute or unmute the sound after it has been played. Adjust the volume with the slider.

  6. The timer advances while sound or music is playing.

Access playback options in a presentation

Selecting the audio icon on a slide in PowerPoint adds two “Audio Tools” tabs. The format includes image effects and image placement options. Playback includes controls for trimming audio, adding a fade, repeating audio, and playing audio in the background.

To use the audio playback tools:

  1. To remove parts of the sound, select cut off sound drag the red and green sliders and select Okay when you’re done.

  2. To add a fade duration at the end and beginning of the sound, change the number in the text boxes fade away and fade away

  3. To change the volume level, select Volume and choose short Average High or mute sound

  4. To change the playback time of a sound on a slide, click the down arrow Get started and choose In a click series automatically or By clicking

  5. To play audio on all slides and in the background, select Play in the background

Do you use multiple devices when presenting slideshows? Store your audio files in the same folder as your PowerPoint presentation. It’s easier to find everything when you want to move files to another device.
