Music sets the mood for your presentation

When you add music to PowerPoint, you have several options. Automatically play music at a specific point in a slideshow or play music across multiple slides.

The instructions in this article apply to PowerPoint 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010; PowerPoint for Office 365 and PowerPoint for Mac.

Audio file formats supported by PowerPoint

Before adding music to PowerPoint presentations, check which audio file formats are supported. If it is not listed below, you cannot use it.

  • Advanced Audio Coding – MPEG-4 Audio File (.m4a, .mp4)

  • AU Audio file (.au or .snd)

  • MP3 audio file (.mp3 or .mpga)

Insert a music file on a slide

It is easy to insert a music file on a slide. Go to slide and select Insert audio Audio on my PC † In the dialog box, select the file and select Insert † The music file icon appears in the center of the slide.

Play music when a slide appears

You can start the music automatically when a certain slide appears or after a delay.

To play music automatically:

  1. Place the music file on the PowerPoint slide where you want the music to play.

  2. Select the music icon on the PowerPoint slide.

  3. Go to page Playing Audio Instruments

  4. Click down arrow Get started and select In a click series or automatically

    In PowerPoint 2010, PowerPoint 2013, and PowerPoint for Mac 2011 In a click series not available.

  5. Go to slideshow and select First to test the music.

To start music after a delay:

  1. Place the music file on the PowerPoint slide where you want the music to play.

  2. Go to Vision and select normal vision.

  3. Select the audio icon on the slide.

  4. Go to section Animations select Add animation and select Play

  5. Select Animation panel and make sure the audio clip is the first item in the list. If you have no other animations, this is the only element.

  6. Click the arrow next to the sound clip and select Effect parameters

  7. Go to the tab the effect

  8. Select First In chapter Start the game

  9. Select After current slide In chapter Stop playing

  10. Go to the tab Time

  11. Click down arrow Get started and select with previous

  12. Click arrow up in the Delay field to specify how many seconds you want to wait before the music starts playing.

  13. Click Okay when you’re done.

Play a song on all slides

You can also play a single song or a collection of music throughout the presentation.

To play music during your presentation in PowerPoint 2019, PowerPoint 2016, PowerPoint 2013, and PowerPoint 2010:

  1. Insert a music file into the first slide of your PowerPoint presentation.

  2. Select the audio icon on the slide, go to the section Play and select Play in the background † Select in PowerPoint 2010 Play through slides

  3. Check the box next to Bike to stop

To play music during your presentation in PowerPoint for Mac:

  1. Open the PowerPoint presentation whose entire slide show you want to play music for and display the first slide.

  2. Go to House select multimedia and choose Audio Browser

  3. Locate the audio file you want to add to your PowerPoint presentation and drag it onto the slide.

  4. Go to page Format audio

  5. Click the arrow next to Get started in Group Sound options and choose Play through slides

  6. Go to Playback options and select Bike to stop

How to hide the audio icon

You may not want the audio icon visible on the slide where you inserted music. Fortunately, hiding this is an easy task.

  1. Select the audio clip icon.

  2. In PowerPoint 2016, PowerPoint 2013, or PowerPoint 2010, go to Play and check the box Hide during playback

  3. In PowerPoint for Mac, select the Down arrow Playback options and choose Hide icon during show
