Add page numbers in PowerPoint

Just as you add page numbers to a Word document to help readers keep track of where you are, you add page numbers to PowerPoint to help you and your audience keep track of where you are in your presentation.

The instructions in this article apply to PowerPoint 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010; PowerPoint for Office 365, PowerPoint for Office 365 for Mac, and PowerPoint 2016 for Mac.

Add slide numbers to PowerPoint on PC

  1. Open your PowerPoint presentation in usual

  2. Go to the first slide in your presentation.

  3. Go to section Insert and in the group Text select slide number

  4. In the dialog box Header and Footer select tab slide

  5. near Record on slide check the box next to slide number † near Example you will see where the slide number will appear on the slide.

    • If you want the slide number to appear only on the current slide, select Apply

    Navigate to each slide where the slide numbers should appear and repeat these steps again. For example, to have slides 1, 3, and 5 slide numbers, repeat the process three times.

    • If you want the slide number to appear on all slides, select Apply to everyone

    • If you want to apply slide numbers to all slides except the first, check the box Do not show on title slide and choose Apply to everyone

    • To add slide numbers to your notes pages, select the tab Notes and handouts check the box next to page number and choose Apply to everyone

  6. If you want the slide numbering to start with a number other than 1, go to the section Design and in the group Institution select Slide Size: Custom Slide Size † In chapter Number of slides from select the desired start number.

    In PowerPoint 2010, go to Design and in the group Page Settings select Page Settings † Then in the section Number of slides from select the desired start number.

Add slide numbers to PowerPoint on Mac

  1. Open your PowerPoint presentation in usual

  2. Go to page Insert and choose slide number

  3. In the dialog box Header and Footer check the box next to slide number and enter the number from which you want to start numbering. near Example shows how the slide number appears on the slide.

  4. If you don’t want the numbering to appear on the first slide, check the box Do not show on title slide

  5. Select Apply to apply it to the current slide only, or select Apply to everyone to apply it to all slides.
