Adobe Acrobat provides desktop and mobile PDF editing services

Adobe Acrobat Pro DC is an application used to create, edit, manage, sign, print, organize and track PDF files. PDF (Portable Document Format) is a standard file format used for distributing and exchanging documents on various platforms. Before the advent of PDFs, compatibility issues made it difficult to share files with other platforms or programs.

Adobe invented the PDF file format in the early 1990s so that electronic documents can be sent to anyone regardless of the platform or software used to view and print the documents. The company later developed the Acrobat software, which is used to edit and create PDF files.

Adobe Acrobat DC

The Adobe Acrobat family consists of several components – some paid and some free – designed to access PDF files on computers and mobile devices.

Acrobat Pro DC for Windows and Mac and Acrobat Standard DC for Windows are desktop products available as monthly or annual Creative Cloud subscriptions. Both versions can be used for:

  • Create PDF files.

  • Edit text and images in PDF files.

  • Store, manage and share files online.

  • Convert documents and images to PDF files.

  • Combine multiple documents and file types into one PDF.

  • Password protect pdf.

  • Export files compatible with mobile devices.

  • Insert, delete and organize PDF pages.

  • Add bookmarks, headings, numbering and watermarks.

  • Split PDF by extracting pages.

  • Collect group feedback in an interactive PDF without having to sign up to rate

  • Mark with markers such as Approved or Draft.

Document Cloud, Adobe’s free cloud storage solution for accessing PDF files on all devices, is included with both Acrobat DC subscriptions and Adobe Sign, a service used to sign legal documents with digital signatures.

The Pro version of Acrobat includes additional features that are not included in the standard version. For example, Acrobat Pro DC can compare two versions of a PDF to check for differences, convert scanned documents into searchable and editable PDFs, and permanently edit sensitive information. Among other things, the standard version does not have these features and has less advanced editing options.

Adobe Creative Cloud and Acrobat.com

Adobe Acrobat Pro DC is available as part of several Adobe Creative Cloud collections. In addition, both versions of Acrobat DC are available on Acrobat.com for a monthly or annual subscription fee.

Additional use cases for Adobe Acrobat DC include:

  • Change text formatting.

  • Add, remove and replace images and text.

  • Correct typos and change fonts.

  • Save PDF files as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

  • Receive signatures and track responses in real time with an online service.

  • Request signatures from recipients.

  • Store PDFs and other work documents in Adobe Document Cloud.

  • Export PDF files as editable Word, Excel, and RTF files, while preserving fonts, formatting, and layouts.

  • Work anywhere with the Acrobat mobile app to edit, sign, organize, and annotate PDFs.

  • Handling advanced prepress requirements.

Adobe Acrobat Reader DC

While Acrobat DC is used to create PDF files, Acrobat Reader DC can be downloaded for free from the Adobe website and used to view and print PDF files on Windows and Mac computers. Acrobat Reader DC allows anyone to open a PDF file for viewing or printing. It can also be used to digitally sign PDF files and collaborate on files.

Acrobat DC can open and use all types of PDF content, including media and forms, and connects to Adobe Document Cloud for desktop and mobile use.

Acrobat Reader DC is a standalone application. Acrobat Pro or Standard does not require a subscription.

Acrobat Reader mobile app

The free Adobe Acrobat Reader mobile app is available for iPhone, iPad, and Android mobile devices.

Use of the Acrobat Reader mobile app includes:

  • View PDF files.

  • Collaborate with others.

  • Scan and sync your signature, or use your finger or Apple Pencil to digitally sign.

  • Connect to Dropbox accounts.

  • Annotate PDFs with notes.

  • Use the format, underline, highlight, and strikethrough tools.

  • Draw on the screen with the drawing tool.

  • Store and share files in the cloud.

  • Receive activity notifications for shared files.

  • Generate a link to share a PDF via email.

With a subscription to one of Adobe’s online services, the Acrobat Reader mobile app can also:

  • Create, convert and edit PDF files.

  • Open Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files in the Acrobat Reader mobile app and convert them to PDFs.

  • Delete, reorder and rotate pages.
