Animate individual parts of a PowerPoint diagram

When your PowerPoint presentation is full of data and charts, you can spice up your presentation by animating chart elements. Highlight the different parts of the diagram as you talk about it.

The instructions in this article apply to PowerPoint for Office 365, PowerPoint 2019, PowerPoint 2016, PowerPoint 2013, and PowerPoint 2010.

Animated Chart Elements

The default setting for PowerPoint chart animation is to apply the animation to the entire chart. In this scenario, the chart moves simultaneously, without much focus on anything in particular. However, different aspects of a chart can be displayed separately by applying animation to individual chart elements.

  1. Open the PowerPoint slide containing the chart (or place the chart in a slide).

This article uses a bar chart in this example, but other types of charts work the same way. If you don’t have a bar chart, select Insert Diagram Column

  2. Select an empty chart area to select the entire chart.

  3. Select Animations

  4. Select Add animation

  5. For example, select one of the login animation options in the first group at the top of the screen To show up or dissolve in

  6. Select Effect parameters † Choose one of the five options from the list.

  7. Select on series to animate the chart using the legend at the bottom of the chart.

  8. Select By category to use the information displayed along the x-axis. This information has headings at the bottom of the table.

  9. Select Per element in series to animate one element in the sequence at a time. In the bar chart example, the corresponding bar in the chart is animated one at a time for each topic title in the legend. Then the next topic title column in the legend is animated one by one, and so on, until all the topics in the legend are animated in the chart.

  10. Select By item in category to animate one item in the category at a time. The corresponding chart column for each topic title, specified as the category displayed at the bottom of the chart, is displayed before moving to the next category title column.

You may need to experiment to determine which method works best for your chart.

Customize map animation

After you choose an animation, adjust the timing of the individual animation steps.

  1. Select Animations Animation panel to open the animation panel.

  4. Select Delay time for each step and press Okay when you’re done.

  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each chart element.

  6. Select Animations Example to see your animation.

  7. Adjust the timing of each animation step on the Timing tab to adjust the speed of the animation, make it faster or slower.
