Learn how to add animations to PowerPoint presentations

Microsoft PowerPoint lets you animate the text displayed on a slide in one word, one letter, or one line at a time.

The instructions in this article apply to PowerPoint 2019, PowerPoint 2016, PowerPoint 2013, PowerPoint 2010, PowerPoint for Mac, PowerPoint for Office 365, and PowerPoint Online.

Force text to appear line by line

If you have a bulleted list that you want to display one bullet at a time during your PowerPoint presentation, animate the text so that each paragraph appears individually on the screen.

  1. Create a text box and enter a bulleted list or multiple paragraphs of text.

  2. Select a text field.

  3. Go to section Animations and select animation. Also, choose a direction if prompted.

  4. Select Effect parameters

  5. Select By paragraph

  6. Select Example to see the animation in action.

Make text appear letter by letter

If you want text to look like it’s printed on the screen, animate the text so that it appears letter by letter.

  1. Select the text box containing the text you want to animate.

  2. Go to section Animations

  3. Choose an animation.

  4. Select Animation panel † An animation panel appears on the right side of the window.

  5. Click the arrow next to Animation in the Animation panel and select Effect parameters

  6. On the Effect tab, select Animate down arrow and select Spell

    To display text on the slide word by word, select by word

  7. Change the delay time in the field % delay between letters

  8. Click Okay when you’re done.

Animation is viewed automatically.
