Automatically forward Gmail messages to another email address

The Gmail web interface offers great organizing, archiving, and searching capabilities. However, some email users prefer to read Gmail in other apps or web interfaces that offer features other than Gmail or are more familiar.

For web services such as Yahoo! Gmail does this by allowing you to forward all received messages to another email address you choose. You can even forward messages that meet certain criteria to external addresses using filters, but the broad all-forward approach is useful if you don’t want to use a partial approach.

To use email clients such as Microsoft Outlook and Apple Mail, you can set up a Gmail account in your email client and receive email instantly without having to forward messages.

To automatically forward incoming Gmail messages to another email address:

  1. Click gear icon in the top right corner of your Gmail screen and select Settings in the drop-down menu.

  2. Select tab Forwarding and POP/IMAP .

  3. in field Forward (the first one you see at the top right) click Add forwarding address .

  4. In the field, enter the address you want to forward future Gmail emails to . Enter a new forwarding email address.

  5. Click Further and then press Get on in a pop-up window.

Disable Gmail Forwarding

To disable Gmail’s automatic forwarding to another service, reverse the above steps. In particular:

  3. Select Settings .

  4. Select Forwarding and POP/IMAP .

  5. Select Disable forwarding in the field Forward .

  6. Select Saving Changes at the bottom of the screen.

Your changes will take effect immediately.
