Keep your Yahoo ID private by disguising it as another email address
Your main Yahoo Mail account uses your Yahoo ID in your email address ([email protected]). To protect your Yahoo ID while sending and receiving email messages, you can use a Yahoo email alias instead of your primary Yahoo email address.
What is a Yahoo Email Alias?
A Yahoo email alias is just another Yahoo email address that you can use as a disguise for your main Yahoo Mail account using your Yahoo ID.
All messages sent to your Yahoo email alias are automatically received in your main Yahoo Mail account. Likewise, any messages you want to send using an email alias can be sent from your main Yahoo Mail account.
Create a new email alias on Yahoo Mail
You can only create an email alias in Yahoo Mail by opening it in a web browser (not in the Yahoo Mail mobile apps for iOS and Android). However, once you are made online, the app will allow you to receive and view messages sent to your email alias.
In a web browser, go to mail.yahoo.com and sign in to your account if necessary.
Select Institutions in the upper right corner.
Select … Institutions at the bottom of the sidebar on the right.
Select letterboxes in the vertical menu on the left.
In section Email alias Press on the button To add †
Enter the name of your new email alias (without the “@yahoo.com” section) in the highlighted box Create a new Yahoo email address.
You can only include letters, numbers, underscores, and periods in your email address. You can also edit your email alias only twice in the next 12 months.
Press the blue button To coordinate †
If the email alias you selected is already in use or unavailable, you won’t be able to use it. You can try a new one or choose an offer from the list below, which Yahoo generates based on your original email alias.
Once your email alias has been successfully created, you will be prompted to provide the following information:
- your name † This will show up in the emails you send.
- Description † A short description, such as ‘subaccount’.
- Reply address † Choose whether you want to receive replies to messages sent to your email alias, back to your email alias, or to your primary Yahoo email address.
Press the blue button Finished †
You can have only one email alias that you can use to send and receive messages. To remove an email alias, just select it under letterboxes in settings and press the red button Remove alias †
Send emails from your Yahoo email alias
Unlike some other email platforms, Yahoo Mail allows you to send and receive email messages from your email alias. Email aliases are usually only valid for forwarding email addresses, meaning they are usually only used to receive email.
You can send email messages using your email alias from both Yahoo Mail on the web and the Yahoo Mail mobile app for iOS and Android.
On the Yahoo Mail on the website, click To create in the top left corner to create a new email.
In the Yahoo Mail app, tap crayon in the lower right corner.
You should see an icon arrow down at the end of the default email address in the field From: † Click it to see all the email addresses you have and select an email alias to make it the sending email address.
Continue composing the letter as usual and send it when you’re done. Recipients see your email alias in the sender’s email list.
Want to make your email alias your default shipping address so you don’t have to manually follow the steps above each time? Select online Institutions † …Additional Settings † letterboxes † Write an email and in the section Default shipping address select drop-down arrow to make your email alias your new default.
Create additional Yahoo email aliases for other uses
Yahoo Mail allows you to have only one primary email alias from which you can send and receive messages, but there are two other types of email aliases you can create for certain types of email transactions.
Only send email addresses
Located under the main label Email alias In the “Mailboxes” section of your settings, you can create up to 10 additional email addresses from which you can send messages.
just choose To add in section Only send email addresses to add an email address. When composing or replying to a new message, simply select drop-down arrow in the field From: to select a send-only email alias.
Disposable Email Addresses
Available email addresses can be found in the section Only send email addresses in the mailboxes section of your settings. The disposable email address is intended to be used to receive newsletters from third parties and to help you control privacy and spam.
You can create up to 500 disposable email addresses that will be delivered to your mailbox, unless you set filters to deliver to other folders. If you no longer wish to receive messages from a disposable email address, you can simply delete it.
