Set margins and columns in a new document

When you create a new file in Adobe InDesign, you specify margins in the New Document window, which opens in three ways:

  • Click To create in the Home workspace.

Change margins and columns in an existing document

If you decide to change the margins or column settings for all pages in an existing document, you can do so on the master page or pages of the document. Changes to the margins and columns of only specific pages of a document are made in the Pages panel. Here’s how:

  1. To change the settings on only one page or spread, go to the page or spread or select the spread or page in the panel Pages † To make changes to the margin or column settings of multiple pages, select the master page for those pages or the page in the panel Pages

Customize ruler guides

The horizontal and vertical ruler guides can be placed anywhere on the page, spread, or cardstock. To add ruler guides, view your document normally and make sure the rulers and guides are visible. Tips to keep in mind when using ruler guides:

  • Click horizontal or vertical ruler and drag to the page to place the page guide. Lower the guide onto the box to cover the box and spread it out.

  • Select a guide and hold alt on Windows or Option on macOS to switch between vertical and horizontal guides.

  • To create horizontal and vertical guides simultaneously, hold down the Ctrl key (Command on Mac) and drag the cursor to where you want the lines to intersect.

  • Double-click a specific location on one of the rulers to create a drag-free scatter guide.

  • If your document contains multiple layers, select the layer on which you want to display ruler guides.
