Use this keyboard shortcut to browse your inbox

If you’re wasting too much precious time in your Gmail inbox, use this quick method to quickly send unwanted messages to the trash. You don’t even have to open them first if you don’t want to. You can delete individual emails and multiple selected emails in Gmail with a keyboard shortcut.

Delete button not working in Gmail

The bad news is that the Delete key on your keyboard won’t work to delete messages from your Gmail inbox. The good news is that you can use the keyboard to delete emails. The trick is to know how to do it.

This shortcut is your friend

Select the email address or emails you want to delete by checking the box to the left of each in your inbox or another Gmail inbox. Press hotkey Shift + 3 . That’s all. Letters are history.

You can also open the email first if you want to see what’s in it and then use the shortcut Shift + 3 . poof! It’s gone.

Either way, you’ll see this notification at the top of the screen: The conversation has been moved to the trash and will be permanently deleted after 30 days. So if you make a mistake, you know where to go to find the mistakenly deleted email.

However, this keyboard shortcut will only work if keyboard shortcuts are enabled in your Gmail settings.

Enable keyboard shortcuts in Gmail

If the keyboard shortcut Shift + 3 doesn’t delete emails for you, the keyboard shortcuts are probably disabled. They are disabled by default in Gmail.

Activate Gmail keyboard shortcuts with these steps:

  1. In the top right corner of the Gmail window, click the gear icon Settings .

  2. Select Settings on the menu. The settings window opens.

  3. Go to the tab Mainly and scroll down to the section Keyboard Shortcuts . Put the switch next to Keyboard Shortcuts .

  4. Scroll down the page and click Saving Changes .

Now the hotkey Shift + 3 active for deleting email messages.
