Dark blue and medium blue hues symbolize importance, confidence, strength, intelligence, stability, unity and conservatism. By adding some orange to your mostly dark blue palette, you bring in warmth and energy that can keep your palette from getting too high or too strong.

You don’t need to use these exact shades. Touch Lighter or Darker, or step one step left or right on the color wheel. These color combinations only help you find the right color palette, using blue and orange as the main components.

Mix deep blue with golden yellow

Take navy blue to almost purple and add a splash of sunny yellow in a complementary color scheme.

Blue is a cool color that gets warm when you add magenta tones, while yellow is a warm color at the other end of the color wheel. Avoid using in equal amounts to avoid unpleasant vibrations. Brighten up your blue with a splash of yellow (or calm your yellow with a black hue).

From dark to light, shown in yellow with each blue swatch in the image above:

  5. blue purple : hex #8A2BE2 | RGB 138.43.226 (SVG color keyword blue-violet)
  6. cobalt blue : hex #3D59AB | RGB 61.89.171

Colors that go towards the violet-violet side of blue can add a touch of mystery, hints of femininity. This adds warmth to the cool blue.

Shades of blue with dark orange

Mid blue to dark blue bordering green. Here, different shades of medium blue and light blue are combined with dark brown oranges.

In addition to the calming properties of cool blue, this darker shade of blue may also contain some of the symbolism of green, such as balance, harmony and stability. It gets a bit of warmth and energy when combined with brownish or reddish shades of orange. Brown is a natural, practical neutral. Red and cyan are opposites on the high-contrast color wheel, but they’re not necessarily a great combination. The transition from red to orange and darker blue makes for a more pleasant palette.

From darkest to lightest red-orange shown with each blue swatch in the image above:

  • deep orange red : hex # CD3700 | RGB 205.55.0

Blue, red and yellow

The split complementary triad takes one color (blue in this case) and then takes the colors on either side of that color’s complement (opposite color on the color wheel). The complement of pure blue is pure yellow. Mid blue is the opposite of orange. Depending on which shade of blue you start with and how many intermediate colors you go through, you can match these with colors ranging from pink-red to yellow-green.

    1. navy: Hex#000080 | RGB 0.0,128
    2. bright red : hex #FE0004 | RGB 254.0.4
    3. sunny yellow : hex #FFFB00 | RGB 255.251.0
    4. Dark blue slate: hex #483D8B RGB 72,61,139 (SVG color keyword dark blue; gray purple blue)

    9. Dark orange: hex # C83200 | RGB 200.50.0 (keyword) not dark orange)

Darker shades of blue represent importance, confidence, power, authority, intelligence, stability, unity and conservatism. Red is another powerful color, but it attracts more attention than blue. Yellow adds brightness and joy. Using equal amounts of each color would make it look more childish (imagine the primary colors) just like example #1, but using only small doses of red and yellow (or nearby colors) with a predominantly dark blue color scheme is great for mature projects you don’t want to show too much Real.
