With the help of a jack, you can easily change the wheels and attachments of the walk-behind tractor. Many are reluctant to do this because they think it is difficult. If you think you can’t make a homemade jack either, this article is for you.

Materials and tools needed

To improve the walk-behind tractor by attaching a jack to it, you need special equipment – a welding machine, a grinder and a drill. To make a scissor jack, you can remake a screw jack or you can create a device from previously created parts.

In addition, the jack requires regular or hexagonal pipes of different sizes. The connection between them is created using a rack and pinion mechanism.

The need to create a homemade jack is due to the fact that it is very inconvenient to change the wheels and cutters of the walk-behind tractor yourself. You have to hold it with one hand and try to remove the wheel with the other, which is often difficult to remove. When it is difficult to work physically, the device may fall off, and in such a situation, it is very easy to tear your back. A jack is a convenient device for lifting a car, which can be easily made with your own hands from improvised materials.

How to DIY

In a homemade jack, the length from the lever to the elbow is 60 cm, the handle is 16 cm (it can be more or less). The width of the device is about 25 cm from edge to edge. This length is necessary so that the knives do not rest on the bar. With these dimensions, the jack will be very stable. Shoulder height – with racks 30 cm (it can be less – depending on the diameter of the wheels). The width between the corners is 14 cm (it is due to the width of the gearbox). It is undesirable to make the racks too wide, as this will interfere with the correct and safe installation of the unit.

There is a nuance in this most primitive construction. The angle between the lever and the shoulder should never be straight (90 degrees). In this case, the walk-behind tractor will always strive to go to the opposite position. The angle should be sharp. The center of the axis should be welded closer to the handle. The optimum angle is around 80 degrees, this is the only way to achieve structural stability and the walk-behind tractor will not tip backwards.

In a properly created design, when lifting, the walk-behind tractor will tend to lean on the handle (60 cm). It is very convenient to use such a jack: the device will lift with one finger. Just lift the lever and the machine will rise to the support area.

You can also strengthen the shoulder. However, as practice shows, this is not necessary.

For a homemade jack, it is ideal to take a hollow pipe with a cross section of 25 mm and a wall thickness of 2 mm. The corners must be taken in 20×20: they are ideal for a jack and weld well. It is necessary to weld the corners so that their external size is about 70 mm, and the internal size is 60 mm. In this case, the walk-behind tractor will not fly away.

Instead of corners, you can take pipes of smaller diameter and bend them accordingly with a vice.

Craftsmen are also advised to make a jack from the Zhiguli. Such a homemade device is very simple and at the same time reliable. It will be easy and convenient to work with a walk-behind tractor.

The finished lift will be easy and convenient to hold the walk-behind tractor when changing wheels and other elements. Do not forget that when carrying out welding work it is important to strictly observe safety rules. It is recommended to take pipes with a diameter of at least 25 mm, since they are strong enough to withstand a lot of weight and a person will not have to exert great effort.

So, making a jack on a walk-behind tractor with your own hands is not difficult.
