Dust is one of the main causes of equipment failure. After all, it is precisely because of the accumulation of dust that the cooling system of laptops and computers is clogged, after which, during intensive work, they begin to overheat. In addition, the dust that settles on the motherboard does not allow it to cool completely, which leads to its overheating and further failure. In this case, it is recommended to periodically overhaul the device (clean it from dust, blow it with compressed air, change the thermal paste in a timely manner) and also use special dust filters. Such a device can be bought at the store or made independently by improvised means.

What are dust filters

Dust filters, which are sold in stores, are usually made in the form of a special protective sheet, in the manufacture of which air-permeable material was used. These filters can be equipped with various mounting systems directly on the PC or laptop housing.

As a rule, such filters have:

  • long period of operation;
  • an acceptable level of filtration (the efficiency of the filtration quality reaches approximately 90%);
  • low air resistance;
  • sound absorption properties.

However, it should be noted that those protective sheets, which are used as dust filters, depending on the material from which they are made, may differ from each other in technical characteristics and functionality.

For fine cleaning of the air entering the PC, polyurethane foam canvases are used. These filters have special open cells that allow air to pass through and retain dust particles up to 5 microns in size.

Non-woven fiber polyester products have a long service life. This material is capable of providing air filtration at a high level and has good dust holding capacity.

Filters, made in the form of a special woven mesh of a material such as polyester, have a low level of resistance. They perfectly pass air flows through them, providing reliable protection of the inside of the case from the ingress of insects, as well as large dust particles.

The user can combine the installation of two filters at once on one PC. For example, some users install canvases made of polyurethane foam (fine cleaning) and fibrous polyester (a long-lasting material) on desks.

How to DIY

You can make a special protective barrier (dust filter) for a PC yourself, using improvised materials for this purpose. In addition, it should be noted that it is far from always possible to quickly find a dust filter for sale, since such products are not found in every store that sells office equipment.

The simplest filter can be made from an ordinary nylon stocking. To do this, the bottom must be attached to the surface of the cooler case, which serves to cool the processor.

In order to secure the bottom, you can use a special bow made of wires and plastic fasteners. The bail is mounted directly to the fan housing and acts as a limiter, preventing the bottom from riding on the blades. The stocking itself is attached to the body of the cooler with ties.

To protect the power supply box from the ingress of dust, it is possible, as a protective barrier, filter, to use the inner layer, the filler, which is equipped with simple medical masks. To attach such a filter to the fan grilles with which the PSU is equipped, you can use a wide adhesive tape.

In addition, a protective dust barrier can be made from ordinary, simple and easily accessible medical gauze. However, such a filter is best used to protect vertical feeds. The gauze should be securely attached with tape to the PSU fan.

It should be noted that dust filters for PCs or laptops are not recommended to be made of dense materials. This is due to the fact that they do not pass air well, and therefore they disrupt the exchange of air inside the device, which leads to its overheating.
