Embed video in PowerPoint

There are many ways to avoid the “death of PowerPoint” (ie bored the presentation audience). A great way to grab attention and wake up your listeners is to record a video. Depending on the nature of your presentation, a video can show you something you couldn’t otherwise, interrupt a conversation, or add depth from the other person’s point of view.

PowerPoint allows you to embed videos stored on your computer in your presentation slides. Use the steps below to embed a video in PowerPoint.

Embedding a YouTube video involves a separate process that is not covered in this post.

Remark . The following instructions apply to PowerPoint 2016, 2013, and 2010, and PowerPoint 365.

Insert video into PowerPoint on PC

  1. Make sure you have the video you want to embed as a file on your computer, ideally in the same folder as your presentation.

    Microsoft recommends using .wmv files in PowerPoint 2010. You can use .mp4 for later versions.

  2. Open your PowerPoint presentation.

  3. At the point in the conversation where you want to use the video, insert a new slide by right-clicking between the other two thumbnail slides in the left column of the screen. Select New slide and when the new slide appears, right click on it and select Layout > empty .

  4. On the tab Insert in Group multimedia select Video > Video on my computer .

    In PowerPoint 2010, choose instead Video from file .

  5. In the navigation pane, select your video, choose Insert . The video will appear on your slide.

  6. Hold down a key ctrl on your keyboard, drag the corner selection handles on the video element to expand it to fill the entire slide area.

  7. Note that the playback bar is near the video. Now you can use it to control video playback.

  8. Select the video element and on the tab Play in Group Video options select automatically In chapter Get started . drop down menu. This option allows the video to play automatically when you reach it in your presentation, rather than having to select it to play.

  9. On the same tab and in the group, check the box Play in full screen . This option allows you to play the video in full size regardless of how it is formatted.

  10. To see the video in action, go to the first slide in your presentation and select the icon slideshow at the bottom PowerPoint; it looks like a projection screen. Now you can view your slides in presentation mode.

Since your video is on your PC, you don’t need to be online for it to work in your presentation.

Insert video into PowerPoint on Mac

The following instructions apply to PowerPoint for Office 365 for Mac and PowerPoint 2019 and 2016 for Mac:

  1. Open Power Point and go to the slide where you want to place the video.

  2. On the tab Insert Click Movie from file .

  3. In the dialog box, select the desired file and click Insert . The video frame appears on the slide.

  4. Format a video: Select it first. On the tab Video format Click Get started and then press automatically to automatically play the video when it reaches that slide in the presentation.

  5. To give your video more attention: on the tab Video format Click video effects and select the desired effect.
