Find out where Outlook stores your email, calendar, and other data

The location of the Personal Folders file depends on the version of Outlook

Microsoft Outlook stores your e-mail messages, contacts, calendars, and other data in personal folder files with an .ost or .pst extension. You must know the location of this file before you can export or back up Outlook files.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook 2019, Outlook 2016, Outlook 2013, Outlook 2010, and Outlook for Office 365.

Where does Outlook store your email, calendar, and other data?

These files are proprietary and complex, so it’s a good idea to back them up regularly. First, you need to find the location where Outlook stores your PST files.

  1. Go to the tab File .

  2. Select Information .

  3. Select account settings > account settings .

  4. In the dialog box account settings select tab Data files .

  5. You can find the location of personal folder files next to each email account set up in Outlook.

  6. Select an account.

  7. Select Open file location to open the folder where Outlook data files are stored.

Email messages for Microsoft Exchange, Office 365, or Outlook.com accounts are stored on your mail server. In most cases, these account types do not have a Personal Folders (.pst) file.
