Find out the exact time someone sent you an email

Gmail shows the time elapsed since the message was sent (for example, 4 hours ago). This is very useful in most cases, but you may find yourself in a situation where you want to know the exact date and time, especially for older emails that only have a date (like June 2nd). Revealing the timestamp of a Gmail message is extremely easy, as it is just a few clicks away from the normal date you always see.

Timestamps in your emails depend on your time zone. Make sure your Gmail time zone is set correctly and check your operating system’s time zone settings.

How do I know when an email has been sent in Gmail

Below we take a look at three different places to read your Gmail messages and how to find out the actual date of a message in each scenario.

From desktop site

  1. Hover over the date/time while a message is open.

  2. Wait for the exact date and time to be displayed.

For example, if a date is May 29, hovering over it will show the specific time the email was sent, such as Monday, May 29, 2017 at 8:45 AM.

  3. Another way to do this on a desktop website is to open a message and then click the three vertically stacked dots next to the reply button (named More)

  4. Select Show original to see when the message was created.

From the Gmail mobile app

To see when a message was sent in the Gmail app:

  1. Open the message for which you want to see the date.

  2. Under the sender’s name, click Show details

  3. Read the details that appear below the sender’s name.

  4. This information includes the sender’s email address, your email address, and the full date the message was sent.

From your Gmail inbox (web)

Google has announced that Inbox by Gmail will no longer be available after March 31, 2019. Users are redirected to the newer version of Gmail.

  1. Open a message in your inbox with Gmail.

  2. Hover your mouse over the date displayed in the title area.

  3. Wait for the full date and time to appear.

  4. To view the timestamp in the original message, click the three vertically stacked dots next to the date.

  5. Select Show original
