Forward attached emails and how to set it as default in Outlook

An email forwarded as an attachment contains everything from the entire email, such as the header and routing information, not just the body of the message. This information can be vital when troubleshooting or reporting a suspicious email. Here’s how to forward an email as an attachment in Outlook.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, 2007, 2003; Outlook for Office 365 and Outlook.com.

Forward an email as an attachment

There may be times when you want to forward an incoming email to someone as an attachment so they know you haven’t edited the message. Or you can attach an email to a message to send them a recording of the conversation.

Each email you forward is attached as an EML file, which can be displayed as a header by some email programs, such as OS X Mail.

For Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, and Outlook for Office 365

The steps for forwarding emails as attachments are the same in Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, and Outlook for Office 365. The screenshots are taken from Outlook 2016 and may result in minor differences from that version.

  1. Select the message you want to forward and go to the tab House .

    Loves . Press and hold to forward multiple emails as attachments in one message ctrl and then select each email you want to attach.

  2. In Group Answer select Additional Response Actions . Select in Outlook 2010 Lake .

  3. Select Forward as attachment .

    Or use the hotkey Ctrl+Alt+F to forward the email as an attachment.

  4. In a text field To who enter the recipient’s email address. In the body of the email, explain why you are forwarding the email as an attachment.

  5. Select send .

For Outlook 2007 and 2003

In older versions of Outlook, the process for forwarding email as an attachment is slightly different. Screenshots are from Outlook 2007. Screenshots in 2003 may be slightly different, but the steps are the same.

  1. Select the email you want to forward as an attachment.

  2. Select Actions > Send as attachment.

    Shortcut for forwarding email as attachment − Ctrl+Alt+F . Use this shortcut after you select the message you want to forward.

  3. A new forwarding message opens and the selected email is added as an attachment.

  4. Enter the recipient’s email address and each message in the body of the message.

  5. Click send when you’re done.

For Outlook.com

The process for forwarding email as an attachment is different from Outlook desktop application. There is no specific option to send as an attachment. However, you can send an email as an attachment on Outlook.com by following these steps.

  1. Select A new message .

  2. On panel inbox drag the message you want to send as an attachment to a new message. A window will appear in a new message Delete messages here . Leave a letter here.

  3. The deleted email is added to the new message as an attachment.

  4. Enter the recipient’s email address, the subject of the message (so the recipient knows it contains a forwarded email), and each message in the email body.

  5. Select send to send a message with an email attachment to the recipient.

Set Outlook to automatically forward emails as attachments

You can set Outlook to send all forwarded emails as attachments by default.

For Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010; and Outlook for Office 365

  1. Go to File .

  2. Select Functions .

  3. Select mail .

  4. In chapter Reply and forward select drop-down arrow When forwarding a message and select Attach original message .

  5. Select Okay .

For Outlook 2007 and 2003

Follow these steps to change the default forwarding option in Outlook 2007 and 2003.

  1. Click Tools > parameters: .

  2. Go to the tab Settings and in the section E-mail Click Email options .

  3. In chapter About replying and forwarding click the drop down arrow When forwarding a message and choose Attach original message .

  4. Click Okay to close the dialog Email options .

  5. Click Okay to close the dialog parameters: .
