An easy way to underline words

There are several ways to underline and make text stand out in an email message. Increase the text size, change the font, add bold or underlined formatting. Another way to select text is to drag the yellow highlight onto it.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013; Outlook for Office 365 and Outlook Online.

Highlight text with highlight background color

Use the selection tool to highlight selected text or enable the highlighting and highlight text in an email message.

  1. Open the email you want to flag.

  2. Select the text you want to highlight.

  3. Go to the tab Message and in the group main text select Text selection color .

    In Outlook Online, go to the toolbar format select at the bottom of the message box highlight and choose a highlight color.

  4. Text is highlighted in the default color.

    To change the highlight color, select the drop-down arrow Text selection color and choose a color.

  5. To use highlighting to highlight multiple text elements, select Text selection color .

  6. Drag the highlight over the text you want to highlight.

  7. With all text selected, select Text selection color to turn the highlight off.

Remove selection from text

To unmark part or all of the text in an email message:

  1. Select the text that is highlighted.

  2. Select Text selection color .

  3. To unmark all text in an email message, click Ctrl+A highlight text.

  4. Select drop-down arrow Text selection color .

  5. Select no colour .
