How to access AOL email with Microsoft Outlook

If you use AOL for email and Outlook to manage your schedule, keep track of to-do lists, take notes, and other useful tools, letting Outlook manage your AOL email accounts as well. AOL provides IMAP access, which can be used to easily connect Outlook to AOL email accounts in just a few steps.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, and Outlook for Office 365.

Add AOL email account to Outlook

Below are the steps for Outlook 2016. The instructions for Outlook 2013 and 2010 are the same.

  1. Click File in the main Outlook menu.

  2. In the left pane, select Information and press Add Account

  3. Enter your AOL email address and click connect

  4. Enter your AOL email account password and click connect

  5. Click Finished

  6. Your AOL email account is now in Outlook and will download messages to your account.

Manually add an AOL email account to Outlook 2010 and 2013

You can manually add an AOL account to Outlook 2010 and 2013. This requires additional steps and server information. The steps for 2010 and 2013 are similar, but there are differences and they will be noted in the steps (images from Outlook 2013).

Below are the details of the AOL SSL mail servers and ports that you must specify when manually configuring your account settings.

  • Incoming mail server (IMAP): imap.aol.com gate 993

  • Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.aol.com gate 465

The outgoing mail server requires authentication.

  1. Click File Information in Outlook 2010 and 2013.

  2. Click Add Account

  3. Put the switch next to Manual installation or additional server type

    In Outlook 2010, this text is slightly different. There stands that Configure server options manually or additional server types

  4. Put the switch next to Pop or IMAP and press Further

  5. In the Pop and IMAP Account Settings window, next to account type, select IMAP in the drop-down menu.

  6. Complete all remaining fields in the account settings window. Enter your name and your AOL email address for your email address.

    1. Enter your name.

    2. Enter your AOL email address.

    3. Next to the incoming mail server, type imap.aol.com

    4. Next to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) type smtp.aol.com

    5. In the Username field, enter your AOL account name without @aol.com (it may already be populated for you).

    6. Enter your AOL account password.

  7. Click Additional Settings

  8. Go to the tab Outgoing server (Outlook 2010 does not show additional tabs here). Check box My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication

    Put the switch next to Use the same settings as on my server for incoming mail

  9. Go to the tab Additionally

  10. For IMAP and SMTP settings, click the drop-down menus and select SLL for both.

    • In the Incoming Mail Server (IMAP) field, type 993

    • In the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) field, type 465

  11. Click Okay

  12. Back in the Add Account window, click Further † This will initiate a validation of the account settings you entered. If everything is entered correctly, both will complete successfully.

    Click close to

  13. Your AOL email account will be added to Outlook. Click Finished
