How to access Gmail with Outlook using IMAP

IMAP lets you receive email and use Gmail features in Outlook

You can set up Outlook to access your Gmail account, import messages and labels, manage email, and even send messages through Gmail using Internet Messaging Access Protoco (IMAP).

Before setting up Outlook

Before you set up Outlook to connect to your Gmail account, you need to complete two preparatory steps.

  1. Enable IMAP in your Gmail account.
  2. Generate App Password if your Gmail account is secured with two-step verification. This special password is used in place of your Gmail account password when configuring your Outlook settings.

After completing these steps, you can upgrade to your version of Outlook below.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, 2007, and Outlook for Office 365.

Set up Outlook 2019, 2016 and Outlook for Office 365 Gmail

Adding a Gmail account to Outlook 2016 is a quick and easy process.

  1. Select File

  2. By choosing Information select in the left pane Add Account

  3. Enter your Gmail address and select connect

  4. Enter your Gmail account password in the field password and choose connect

    Please note that if your Gmail account is using two-step verification, you will need to enter the app password you generated in the field password

  5. If the connection to your Gmail account is successful, you will see your Gmail address under IMAP

  6. Select Finished

Set up Outlook 2013 and 2010 Gmail

The process for adding email accounts in Outlook 2013 and 2010 is similar. The screenshots below are from Outlook 2013; The screens in Outlook 2010 will be slightly different, but the layout and functionality are the same.

  1. Select File Information

  2. Select Add Account

  3. Enter your name (the name you want to appear in messages others receive from you), your Gmail E-mail address and your Gmail account Password .

    If your Gmail account uses two-step verification, make sure to generate a Gmail app password to use in the field password

  4. Select Further

  5. Outlook runs a series of tests to verify the connection to your Gmail account. If all tests passed successfully, your Gmail account is set up and ready to use.

  6. Select Finished

Configure Outlook 2007 Gmail

Follow these steps to set up Outlook 2007 to access Gmail messages and tags. If you have older versions of Outlook, you can open Gmail with Outlook 2002 or 2003).

  1. Click Tools account settings from the menu in Outlook.

  2. Open a tab E-mail

  3. Click New

  4. Make sure it is selected Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP or http

  5. Click Further

  6. Enter your name † This name appears on messages that recipients receive from you.

  7. Enter your full Gmail address in the field E-mail address

    Make sure to include If your Gmail account name is asdf.asdf, make sure to type for example [email protected]

  8. know for sure Manually configure server settings or additional server types the checkbox is checked.

  9. Click Further

  10. Make sure it is selected Internet email address

  11. Click Further

  12. Select IMAP in the ‘Account Type’ section.

  13. Enter In chapter Incoming mail server

  14. Enter In chapter Outgoing mail server (SMTP)

  15. Enter your Gmail account name under user name † For example, if your Gmail address is [email protected], your username is asdf.asdf.

  16. Enter your Gmail password in the field password

    If your account has Gmail two-step verification enabled, create and use an Outlook 2007 application password.

  17. Click Additional Settings

  18. Go to the tab Outgoing server

  19. know for sure My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication set.

  20. Go to the tab Additionally

  21. Select SSL for Incoming server (IMAP) and Outgoing server (SMTP)

  22. Enter 465 in the field Outgoing server (SMTP) server port numbers

  23. Click Okay

  24. Click Further

  25. Click Finished

  26. Click close to

Using POP instead of IMAP

As an alternative to IMAP, you can set Outlook to use POP to connect to Gmail. POP does not provide features available to an IMAP-linked Gmail account; instead, it simply downloads your new messages from your account to Outlook.
