Send and receive Outlook email in the Thunderbird web browser

Set up your Mozilla Thunderbird email client to connect to your Outlook.com account via IMAP and access messages, network folders, and other Outlook.com features. Or connect to your Outlook.com account using the POP email protocol to download messages from your inbox to Thunderbird.

The instructions in this article apply to the Mozilla Thunderbird web browser; and Microsoft, work, and school accounts that access Outlook Online.

Set up Outlook.com in Thunderbird with IMAP

Follow these steps to set up an Outlook.com email account in Thunderbird using IMAP.

  1. Open Thunderbird menu

  2. Select parameters: account settings

  3. Click the drop-down arrow Account actions and select Add email account

  4. Enter your name E-mail address to your Outlook.com account and password

    If 2-step verification is enabled for your Outlook.com account, generate an app password for your Microsoft account and enter the app password in the text box password

  5. Select Get on

  6. In chapter Configuration in Mozilla ISP database select IMAP (Remote Folders)

  7. Select Finished

  8. In the dialog box account settings select Okay

If Mozilla Thunderbird did not detect the Outlook.com mail server settings automatically, enter these settings via manual configuration:

  • IMAP server name: outlook.office365.com

  • IMAP port: 993

  • IMAP encryption method: TLS

  • SMTP server name: smtp.office365.com

  • SMTP port: 587

  • SMTP encryption method: STARTTLS

Enable POP access on your Outlook.com account

To use POP as the connection protocol for your Outlook.com account, enable it as follows:

  1. Go to your Outlook.com account and select Settings View all Outlook settings

  2. Select mail Synchronize email

  3. In chapter POP and IMAP select Yes to allow devices and apps to use POP.

  4. Choose whether you want devices and apps to delete messages after they’ve been downloaded from Outlook.com.

    • Select Prevent devices and apps from deleting messages from Outlook to save messages on Outlook.com after Thunderbird has downloaded them.
    • Select Allow apps and devices to delete messages to delete messages from Outlook.com after Thunderbird has downloaded them.

  5. Select Save

Set up Outlook.com in Thunderbird with IMAP

After you enable POP access on your Outlook.com account, follow these steps to connect Thunderbird via POP:

  1. Open Thunderbird menu and select parameters: account settings

  2. Click the drop-down arrow Account actions and select Add email account

  3. Enter your name E-mail address for your Outlook.com account. and password

    If 2-step verification is enabled for your Outlook.com account, generate an app password for your Microsoft account and enter the app password in the text box password

  4. Select Get on

  5. In chapter Configuration found in Mozilla ISP database select POP3 (keep email on your computer)

  6. Select Finished

  7. In the dialog box account settings select Okay

If Mozilla Firefox did not detect Outlook.com mail server settings automatically, please enter the following settings through manual configuration:

  • POP server: outlook.office365.com

  • POP Port: 995

  • POP encryption method: TLS

  • SMTP server: smtp.office365.com

  • SMTP port: 587

  • SMTP encryption method: STARTTLS
