Using Outlook.com to manage and send Yahoo Mail messages

Keep all your email accounts in one place. Add your Yahoo Mail account to Outlook.com and upload your messages and folders to Outlook. You can also use Outlook.com to send messages through your Yahoo Mail account. Yahoo Mail can be configured to arrive in a separate Yahoo Mail folder or Outlook inbox. Before you add your Yahoo Mail account, you must set it up so that Outlook.com can access it. How you do this depends on whether you’re using two-step verification.

The instructions in this article apply to the Outlook.com email client.

Yahoo Mail Accounts with 2-Step Verification

If your Yahoo Mail account uses the two-step verification security feature, create a password for the Yahoo Mail app and use it instead of your account password when setting up access in Outlook.com.

Accounts without two-step verification

If your Yahoo Mail account doesn’t use two-step verification, set up your account so that Outlook can access it. Go to the Yahoo Account Security page and select at the bottom of the screen Allow apps that use less secure login

If you want your Yahoo Mail account to be more secure, you should add two-step verification and use an app password instead.

Add Yahoo Mail Account to Outlook.com

Follow these steps to set up Outlook.com to access your Yahoo Mail mailbox.

  1. Sign in to your Outlook.com email account.

  2. Select Institutions

  3. Select View all Outlook settings

  4. Select mail Synchronize email

  5. In section Connected Accounts select Other email accounts

  6. In a text field Display name enter the name you want to appear in the email other users have received from you.

  7. Enter your Yahoo Mail email address and password.

    If your Yahoo Mail account uses two-step verification, enter the app password you generated.

  8. Choose to create a new folder for your Yahoo mail or to import Yahoo mail into existing Outlook folders.

  9. Select Okay

Importing messages can take some time if you have a lot of Yahoo emails. Since this is going from server to server, you can close your browser and turn off your computer. When the import is complete, your Yahoo Mail messages will appear on Outlook.com.

If the connection fails, select the IMAP/SMTP connection settings or the POP/SMTP connection settings on the error screen and manually enter the information for your Yahoo Mail account.

Manage your connected accounts

To make changes to your Yahoo Mail account, go to Institutions View all Outlook settings Mail Synchronize email † Your Yahoo account, as well as other email accounts set up on Outlook.com, are listed under: Manage connected accounts † You can find the latest update time next to the account name. There are also options to edit, delete and update an account.

Send Yahoo Mail via email from Outlook.com

To send an email from your Yahoo email address, select: A new message to display the message bar. Select From in the address field and select your Yahoo email address from the drop-down menu. If you plan to use it often, set your default Yahoo email address for sending messages.

Forward new emails from Yahoo Mail to Outlook.com

If you don’t want to import your existing Yahoo Mail email messages and folders into Outlook.com, go to your Yahoo account and set up your Yahoo Mail account to automatically forward messages to your Outlook.com account.

When you forward Yahoo Mail messages to your Outlook.com account, you cannot send messages from your Yahoo Mail account using Outlook.com.

  1. Sign in to your Yahoo Mail account.

  2. Select Institutions

  3. Select Yet Institutions

  4. Select letterboxes

  5. In section List of mailboxes select your Yahoo Mail account.

  6. In section Forward enter your Outlook.com email address.

  7. Select Confirm † An email has been sent to your Outlook.com account.

  8. Search your Outlook.com account for a confirmation email from Yahoo. Click the link and follow the security instructions to verify your Outlook.com email address.

  9. Your Yahoo Mail account will now forward all newly received messages to your Outlook.com account.
