With the development of modern technology, people have realized that human strength is not unlimited, and a favorable wind usually takes a long time to wait. Therefore, owners of small boats now almost without fail try to equip their ship with some kind of power plant. The main thing is to choose the right model.

type of engine

All current outboard boat motors can be divided into two types: electric and gasoline.

The latter option is considered the most popular and has a number of significant advantages over its competitor. After all, these powerful power plants are able to quickly disperse the boat and maintain high speed for a long time. Well, refueling in this case takes only a few minutes, unless, of course, the owner of the boat takes with him a canister with the most common gasoline, kerosene or a mixture of gasoline and fuel. oil (depending on engine design).

However, electric motors also have their fans, as they have unique advantages. The main advantages of such a power plant are considered quiet operation and environmental friendliness. However, electric motors also have a big drawback in the form of limited range, since motors of this type work with batteries that need to be recharged from time to time.

Engine power

The choice of this parameter directly depends on the recommendations of the manufacturer of small craft, operating conditions and the desire of the owners of the floating craft. However, there are also general rules:

  • for small boats, which usually move at low speed on small rivers and lakes with calm waters, outboard or electric motors capable of “giving” 2 to 6 l/s are ideal;
  • more powerful engines – from 8 to 15 l / s – should be installed on four-seater boats from 3 to 3.5 meters for long trips and fishing, since they have good autonomy and a fairly large power reserve ;
  • it is customary to equip yachts, boats and other large ships with serious power plants with a capacity of 20 l / s in order to safely navigate not only on full-flow rivers, large lakes and reservoirs , but also to make boat trips without fear .
Attention!!! Low power engines do not need to be registered, but they are not able to put the boat in planing mode. Moreover, a heavy boat with such an engine will be carried away not only by the current, but also by small gusts of wind.

motor cycle

This feature is important only for owners of gasoline-powered outboard motors. It all depends on the design of the power plant, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Two-stroke engines are affordable, lightweight, and offer spirited acceleration. The main disadvantages of such units are low power, noise and “gluttony”. After all, these power plants do not have a camshaft with a valve group. Therefore, they work on a gasoline / oil mixture, which the owner of the boat has to prepare with his own hands and will have to do it very often.

Four-stroke engines are much more expensive and heavier. But such installations are relatively economical and environmentally friendly, “use” pure gasoline, and also do not differ in peculiar noise and work stably at any speed.

It is on three criteria, according to experts, that the owner of a small boat should first of all pay attention when choosing an outboard motor, if he, of course, does not want to encounter problems when fishing or walking in bodies of water.
