Change the presentation format to work with your favorite application

If you’re a Google Slides user but need to edit your PowerPoint file, you’re not stuck. Here’s how to convert PowerPoint to Google Slides.

Formatting may change when converting a Powerpoint file to Google Slides.

Drag PowerPoint file to Google Slides

Use this method if your PowerPoint file is on a local drive.

  1. Open Google Docs.

  2. if slides not yet selected, in the top left corner of the application, select the icon menu (three dashes).

  3. Choose from the menu slides

  4. In the top right corner of the application, select the icon file selection (file directory).

  5. On screen Open file select To download † You will see a section called Drag the file here

  6. Navigate to the folder where your Powerpoint file is stored. With two screens open side by side, drag the Powerpoint file into the section Drag the file here

  7. You will see a message while downloading the file loading † Your file will then appear in the Google Slides environment and you can get started with it.

Upload your PowerPoint file to Google Slides

This method is an alternative when your Powerpoint file is stored on a local drive.

  1. Open Google Docs.

  2. if slides not yet selected, in the top left corner of the application, select the icon menu (three dashes).

  3. Choose from the menu slides

  4. Select at the bottom right of the screen Create a new presentation (+ sign).

  5. You will be taken to the Google Slides editing environment.

  6. Select in the top left corner File > Import Slides

  7. In the dialog box, select To download and then press Select a file on your computer

  8. Navigate to the file and select it.

  9. After you upload the file, you will be prompted to select the slides you want to use. Do this by selecting each slide or by selecting Everything in the upper right corner.

  10. When you’re done choosing, select in the lower right corner Import slides

  11. The presentation appears in the editing environment and you can work with it as usual.

Upload Powerpoint File to Google Drive

This method also works for files located on a local drive.

  1. Open Google Drive.

  2. Select in the top left corner New File upload

  3. Navigate to the file you want to download and select it.

  4. You will see a download message and then the file will appear in your Google Drive file list. Select a file.

  5. Choose from the menu at the top of the screen to open with Google Slides

  6. The converted presentation appears in the Google Slides editing environment and you are ready to go.

Open a PowerPoint file from Google Slides

Use this method if your PowerPoint file is already in your Google Drive.

  1. Open Google Docs.

  2. if slides not yet selected, in the top left corner of the application, select the icon menu (three dashes).

  3. Choose from the menu slides

  4. Select at the top of the screen down arrow and select a viewing location.

  5. Select the powerpoint file. You’ll see a dialog box asking if you want to open the file in View Only mode or Edit as Google Slides mode. Select Edit like Google Slides

  6. Now you can work with the file as usual.
