Highlight important pie chart data

Excel has several options for emphasizing specific sections or fragments. pie charts that do not require any modification or reorganization of the chart data – these include:

  • Explode or pull a selected piece from the rest of the pie.

  • Focus on one or more pie chart segments.

  • Focus on one or more slices using a pie chart.

The instructions in this article apply to Excel 2019, 2016, 2013, and Excel for Office 365.

Blow up a piece of the pie

To emphasize a particular section of the pie chart, you can move or crush segment of the rest of the chart, as shown in the image above.

If you have one or two large segments that dominate the pie chart, making it difficult to see the details of the smaller segments, you can switch to one of the chart types mentioned above; they emphasize smaller segments in a secondary chart, either in a second pie chart or a stacked bar chart.

If not changed, Excel automatically includes the three smallest segments (data points) in the secondary pie or stack column chart. To create a “pie or pie” chart:
