Photoshop Spin Blur Review

One of the really nice features of the Adobe Photoshop CC 2014 release was the inclusion of Spin Blur. Up until this release, creating spinning wheels in Photoshop was a tedious process to say the least. You need to make a copy of the wheel in a new layer, warp it to make it round, somehow find the magic filter setting Radial Blur and then warp the wheel back to its original position and perspective.

Creating Smart Objects in Photoshop

The first thing you need to do is convert the image layer into a smart object. The advantage here is the ability to reopen and “tweak” Blur at any time. For this right click on the layer and select Convert to Smart Object on the menu context

Use a magnifying glass to enlarge an object

You want it right. Select magnifying glass or zoom tool or press the key z and click and drag to enlarge the bus. It should be noted that the tire is not perfectly round and magnification will allow you to be more accurate when mounting the Spin Blur to the tire.

How to find Photoshop Spin Blur

Spin Blur is not a separate Blur effect. It can be found with other new blur effects in the blur gallery. You will find it in Filter > Blur Gallery > Rotate Blur. This will add blur to the image. Drag it to the bus.

Adjusting Spin Blur’s shape

Four handles appear. External Markers ( Up, Down, Left, Right ) are used to reshape and rotate the ellipse. Internal markings – White dots – determine the disappearance of the blur. fade middle is the handle in the middle. To move it, press the key Option (Mac) or Alt (PC) and drag the center handle to the center of the rim or rotating object.

Adjust Spin Blur Properties in Photoshop

There are two places where you can “tweak” Blur properties. On panel Blur Tools you can change the blur angle. On panel Motion blur effects you adjust the strobe strength. This is what they do:

  • Strobe flashes. Flashes of stroboscopic flashes. With this virtual flash you can determine how many flashes.
  • Strobe Power: † This option controls the amount of image blur between flash bursts.
  • Strobe duration † Allows you to specify the length of the strobe exposure in degrees.

How to Apply Photoshop Spin Blur

Click OK to accept the changes. At this point you’ve made a rotation, but the devil is in the details and we need to apply the same rotation to the rear wheel.

Duplicate Spinning in Photoshop

It’s not hard to do. Double click on the Blur Gallery layer to open the effect. Press and hold the O button ption/Alt-Command/Ctrl , drag a copy of the effect to the rear wheel. Use the handles and property bars to get the right shape and effect. This would also be a great time to “blur” the Spin Blur on the front wheel. When you’re done, click OK.

More uses for Photoshop’s Spin Blur

The great thing about graphics software is that once you know what it’s capable of, your creative options are only limited to what you’ve set up for yourself. In this example, I’ve used the same blur rotation on both sides of the clock to give the impression that time is speeding up or the clock is out of control. This effect can be used on anything. Need stagecoach wheels to look fast? turn them. Need a flower or other fixed object to move? Twist. Remember if your reason for applying this effect is: “Hey, that’s nice.” , then you might want to rethink why you’re using it. If there is no reason for the effect, then there is a reason not to apply it.
