The Outlook reading pane, also known as the preview pane, is useful for some, but for others there are times when it is unwanted or gets in the way of the default location. You can disable the reading bar or change its location in the Outlook window.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, 2007, 2003; and Outlook for Office 365.

  1. Go to Vision and choose Reading panel

  2. Select Out

  3. The reading panel is closed.

To configure Outlook to start with reading panes disabled for all mail folders, create a shortcut for Outlook if you don’t already have one.

  1. Right click on the Outlook shortcut icon and select Characteristics

  2. Select tab Label

  3. In a text box Target place the cursor at the end of the existing text and type /no preview

  4. Select Okay † When you open Outlook with a shortcut, all mail folders are reset, so the reading pane is disabled.

Every time you open Outlook with this shortcut, the reading panes are disabled, even if you had them visible the last time you used Outlook. Assignment /no preview in a shortcut resets the reading panes on every launch.
