When carrying out repair work, the question of thread elongation often becomes relevant. The choice of the method of lengthening is complicated by the different types of wiring in the apartment. The elongated contact must be solid and have a minimum contact resistance. If you are looking for safe ways to lengthen wire, this article is for you.

Welding

Soldering is the most reliable way to extend wire. First, the working parts should be prepared by removing a layer of insulation (no more than 7 mm long). If the surface of the core shows oxidation, they must be removed. After that, the core must be treated with solder. In order for the solder to lie evenly on the surface, a liquid flux is applied.

In this way, all threads that need to be lengthened are dealt with. Soldering is considered reliable if the conductors to be connected remain stationary until the solder has completely cooled. Then the joints are insulated with tape or special tubes.

Protective goggles should be worn during operation. The soldering iron must be installed on a fire-resistant stand.

Crimping with sleeves

When connecting, special sleeves are used. Outwardly, they look like tubes and are a connecting mechanism.

The cores of the processed threads are inserted into the tube from both ends, compressed with pliers. This way you can get a reliable electrical set. The tube can be compressed in several places, depending on the length and section of the conductors. The cores and the sleeve are subjected to some deformation by compressing and compressing the surfaces of the conductors which carry the current. Subsequently, the junction is securely insulated.

More often, crimping is used in cases where it is not possible to use another method:

  • when it is necessary to connect conductors subject to an increased current load;
  • when working with stranded conductors;
  • if you need to connect wires with a large section.

Advantages of pressing:

  • does not require electricity for work;
  • it is possible to connect conductors made of different metals;
  • anyone can learn crimping;
  • it is possible to make switching in spaces with a small area.

With terminal blocks

To build threads this way, you need to:

  • remove part of the insulating coating;
  • carefully clean the ends;
  • install them in the terminal box on both sides;
  • place the wires in the corrugated tube.

The terminal blocks can be used even if the metal of the current conductors is different. This type of connection is considered more secure and reliable. However, it cannot always be used, since the boxes create additional volume in the structure.

The advantages of terminals are that there is no need to insulate the junction, since the conductors are in a protective casing.

Screw terminals

Cable ties allow the cable to be connected without disturbing its structure. The design reliably fixes threads of different metals and alloys. It is a metal channel of small diameter. It has 2 threaded holes for mounting screws. Unidirectional polyethylene screws for household use.

Clamps are distinguished by:

  • cable diameter;
  • insulation class;
  • the number of contact points;
  • current characteristics.
The clamps can be used in all working conditions and cable specifications common in everyday life.

In general, connecting the wires is not difficult. Even beginners can learn how to do it. When performing electrical work, you must strictly observe safety rules.
