In the middle of a busy day in a carpentry shop or on a home sander, the tape can fail at the crucial moment. It happens that there is no spare, but the hardware store is finished. Buying the right size is always expensive. Therefore, to save money and time, it is advantageous to buy cloth-based sandpaper and make it yourself.

Materials and tools

Items to craft:

  • a large, long sheet of sandpaper;
  • a piece of dense metal, for the preparation of gluing;
  • degreaser;
  • gas burner;
  • stationery knife;
  • scissors, ruler, rubber pencil;
  • clothes pegs;
  • vice, magnet, class D3 PVA glue.

Two methods for making a tape with your own hands

  1. Overlap – the resulting connection is characterized by increased strength and minimizes gaps. The disadvantage is that during operation there is a beating.
  2. Butt – seamless connection. The probability of a rupture is higher, but the blows become minimal.

Let’s start preparing

Before work, we prepare sandpaper with the desired grain.

We make markings for the future product and cut to the size of the template. Properly prepared edges ensure durability and durability.

We place the ends of the sanding belt in the desired pattern. We cut the sides at an angle of 30-45 degrees, then remove the excess. This option is considered standard when working with abrasive tape.

We bend the measured edge of the tape by 10-20 mm and clean the abrasive with the blunt side of the knife. The other side of the tape does not need to be cleaned, but for a stronger bond we remove a little chamfer from the edges.

Overlapping bonding

  1. We bend the strips of sandpaper in half, carefully align the place for gluing. Secure the edges with clips.
  2. We apply PVA D3 to the finished sections and calibrate evenly to connect the ends with an overlap.
  3. Spread a small amount of glue on the top end of the edge. We put paper or newspaper on both sides so that the tape does not stick.
  4. From top to bottom we put wooden or plywood bars. We make a clamp with pliers. The product will be ready to use the same day.

Butt bonding

The preparatory process is carried out in the same way as the overlap option.

  1. Join the ends of the ribbon end to end. Apply glue to the inside surface.
  2. We make a cut of the fabric that corresponds to the size and glue it to the junction.
  3. It is necessary to smooth and firmly press the patch.
  4. For greater reliability, the seam is made with a hot iron or beaten with a hammer.

Tips for removing abrasive from a product

Removing with an iron is a real way for masters. We wait until it warms up to red, apply sandpaper to the surface. Gradually and carefully scrape off the abrasive with a knife or metal saw blade.

To facilitate the removal of the abrasive, carpenters sometimes use acetone. To do this, thoroughly wet the surface of the sandpaper where the bend was made. Leave the edges in the liquid for 10 minutes. In time, this will saturate the sandpaper and it will become easier to remove the dust. Masters do not like this option for a pungent smell. In a poorly ventilated room, it becomes bad. Especially if there are more than two products.

Masters who independently prepare tapes for work mainly use the overlapping method. The link is strong in carpentry. Butt gluing reduces runout when working with metal or wood. The runout problem is not critical for most jobs.

Homemade sanding belts are not inferior in quality to factory ones. This option will save you a lot of money. Making a sanding belt with your own hands is not as difficult as it seems at first glance.
