Materials and tools needed

To make a homemade drill you will need:

  • nail, its dimensions depend on the desired exit hole;
  • hammer;
  • grinder;
  • file or scissors for metal;
  • Welding machine;
  • a small amount of graphite for the manufacture of hard metal drills.

Work process

  1. We grind the tip of the nail with a grinder halfway.
  2. Using a hammer, we beat the ground end of the nail to the state of a flat screwdriver.
  3. We return to the emery machine and make cutting edges from different sides. Precision is not required, but the nail should take on the appearance of a drill.
  4. Cut the head of the nail with a file or scissors for metal.

At this stage of work, the homemade product is ready to drill holes in wood, plastic and some types of soft metals. If the drill is needed for harder materials, we keep improving it.

Drill hardening

Here you will need crushed graphite and a welding machine. Graphite can be obtained from batteries, pencils, or an old graphite brush, which needs to be filed down into a powder. Graphite powder is poured onto a metal substrate, a piece of galvanized profile or a metal pot.

We connect the minus of the welding machine to the nail, and the plus to the base of the substrate. We turn on the welding machine, setting the inverter to the minimum values.

The curing process begins by carefully running the edge of the nail over the graphite. It is important to prevent the nail from touching the substrate and burning the graphite. We move the nail gently and slowly, we observe that the graphite shimmers shimmering. Lift the nail when you see that the contact point has warmed up. The whole process takes about 3-4 minutes. A homemade hard metal drill is ready, you can safely use it.

Advice! Use a variety of lubricants while drilling to prevent friction. Apply a little oil to the work surface and cutting edge. Remember to take breaks to cool the edge and the drill site.
