Flyers still have their place in the world, whether you’re hosting an event, selling a service, or trying to unload a decent but unnecessary piece of furniture. The flyer can put your information where people can see it, such as on a bulletin board in the workplace. Flyers don’t have to be trendy; they just need to grab attention and provide specific information so that readers know exactly how to communicate with you. Here are instructions for creating a flyer in Word, including several versions.

How to make a flyer in Word 2016, 2013, 2010 or 365 (online)

  1. In Word, open the tab File and choose from the menu New

  2. Select under the search bar flyers. (In Word 2010, click flyer and then select the desired template from the folders. If you don’t like any of the options, enter a specific search term, such as “picnic”. flyer” in the search bar, then select from the options that appear. Go to step 5.)

  3. Browse free Word flyer templates until you find the design you like.

  4. Click it and then click To create.

    If you can’t find a template you like, try downloading it from Microsoft.

  5. To change the text, select it and enter new information.

  6. To change the image, right click on an existing image and select Change image…. In the dialog box, select From file † Navigate to the image on your computer and click Insert.

  7. To change the color or other design attribute of a content field, right-click in the field and select the appropriate menu options to change the element.

  8. Delete an unwanted item by clicking it and then remove on keyboard.

  9. When your flyer is ready, you can print it or (depending on what you want to do with it later) save it to your hard drive, cloud, or flash drive.

    Saving changes to your document doesn’t change the template you started with. You can reopen the template to launch a new flyer and it will look the same as when you opened it before.

  10. You are ready.

Create a completely new flyer in Word 2010

If you want, you can design a flyer from scratch. The instructions below are for Word 2010, but are the same for any recent version of Word.

  1. Open a blank document in Word.

  2. Insert an image that grabs viewers’ attention:

    1. Open a tab Insert and choose Image.

    2. Navigate to the desired image and click Insert.

    3. Move the corner circles to make the image smaller or larger.

    4. Click on the image and then open the tab Format to customize elements such as borders and styles.

    5. If you want to move the image to a different location, make this adjustment first: right click on the image and select text wrapping, than Behind the text. Now you can use the pointer to move the image around the page with ease.

  3. To insert a title with WordArt:

    1. Place your mouse pointer where you want the title to appear.

    2. Open a tab Insert and choose word art.

    3. In the WordArt box, select the style you want.

    4. The text field appears. Highlight the dummy text and start typing to replace it.

    5. To change the text size, open the tab At home and in the Font area, change the font size.

    6. Move the field to where you want it on the page.

  4. Create additional text boxes using the same process as #3.

  5. When your flyer is ready, you can print it or (depending on what you want to do with it later) save it to your hard drive, cloud, or flash drive.

Create a flyer in Word for Mac

Finally, here’s how to create a promotional flyer in Word for Mac. The easiest and fastest way to do this is to open the template from Microsoft.

Word for Mac 365 edition

  1. Select New from template.

  2. Scroll in the next window until you find the pattern flyer † Click To create

Word for Mac 2011 version

  1. On the menu File select Create from template.

  2. Click in the left column on flyers. Then scroll through the templates until you find the right one.

  3. Click on the image and in the dialog box click Select.

You can also type the word “flyer” in the search box and you will see a series of templates that match.

With the new template open, you can click on any placeholder text and start typing to add your information to the flyer. If you don’t need a placeholder text field, click the text in it and click remove on keyboard.

Adjusting the color and size of text is done the same way as in any Word document, using the controls on the tab At home in version 365 and version 2011.

Change the template image

Word for Mac 365 edition

  1. Click on the template image.

  2. Click on the tab at the top of the window Image format

  3. Click on the left Change image (this field contains two icons and a curved arrow labeled Change image

  4. On the next screen, navigate to the image you want to use. Click Insert.

Word for Mac 2011 version

  1. On the toolbar, click the icon media browser

  2. Navigate to the image on your hard drive, drag the thumbnail into the flyer image area and release.

If you need to resize the image, select it and drag the handles (which look like little squares).

When your flyer is ready, you can print it or (depending on what you want to do with it later) save it to your hard drive, cloud, or flash drive. Remark. Saving changes to the document does not change the template you started with. You can reopen the template to launch a new flyer and it will look the same as when you opened it before.
