Learn how to change page title when formatting Word file

The heading in a Microsoft Word document is the portion of the document that is in the top margin. The footer is the portion of the document that is in the bottom margin. Headers and footers can contain page numbers, dates, chapter titles, the author’s name, or footnotes. Typically, information entered in the header or footer area is displayed on every page of the document.

Sometimes you need to remove the header and footer from the title page or table of contents in a Word document, or change the header and footer on a page. If so, these quick steps will tell you how to get there.

How to insert headers or footers

Follow these steps to insert headers or footers in a multi-page Microsoft Word document.

  1. Open a multi-page document in Word.

  2. On the first page Double click at the top of the document in the area where the header will appear, or at the bottom of the page where the footer will appear header and footer ribbon tab.

  3. Click on icon Page main or icon footer and select a size from the drop-down menu. Enter your text in the formatted title. You can also bypass the formatting and click in the header or footer area and start typing to manually format the header or footer.

  4. The information appears in the header or footer of every page in the document.

Remove header or footer from first page only

To remove the header or footer from the first page only, double-click the header or footer on the first page to open it page main & footer tab.

Check box Other front page tab Header and Footer ribbon to remove the contents of the header or footer on the first page, while leaving the header or footer on all other pages.

Add a different header or footer to the first page

To place a different header or footer on the first page, remove the header or footer from the first page as described above and double-click the header or footer area. Click on icon Page main or footer choose a format (or not) and enter the new information on the first page.

Headers and footers on other pages are not affected.
