Quickly clear your queue without reading every message
There are many reasons why you might want to mark messages in Gmail as read without opening them. After all, it’s really nice to have zero pending notifications.
Gmail has some handy controls to help you get to that glorious zero notification point. Allows you to select one or more messages as read, or you can open an entire label. Plus, Gmail offers keyboard shortcuts that make everything much faster and more efficient.
Mark an email address as read in Gmail
To mark an email or email as read in Gmail:
Open a browser and sign in to Gmail.
Select the messages you want to mark as read by checking the box next to them. You can also quickly check a series of messages.
If you’re looking for specific posts, try searching for the attributes you want and mark as read in the search results.
While you can check all messages in the current label or search results to label them, see below how to mark them as read.
If you’ve marked one or more messages, the toolbar directly above your inbox changes to show additional options. Find Mark as read † The icon is an open envelope.
Click Mark as read to mark each message you select as read.
Efficiency is everything, and it’s not exactly efficient to scroll through Gmail’s controls. There is a faster way to mark your messages as read with a simple keyboard shortcut. It takes a minute or two to set up, but it can save time in the future.
Return to your Gmail inbox.
Select gear icon settings in the top right corner of the window.
Menu appears Institutions † Select Institutions †
You will be taken to the Gmail settings page. You have to be on the tab to get started. General but if not, select it from the menu at the top.
Scroll until you see Keyboard Shortcuts and select Shortcuts on † When you’re done, scroll down and click Saving Changes †
In your inbox, select the messages you want to mark as read.
Now hold Shift and press l to mark messages as read. So the keyboard shortcut for marking messages as read is − Shift+i †

To mark all messages in a label or Gmail view as read:
To get started, open the shortcut you want to work in and make sure no messages are checked.
If you have hotkeys enabled, you can press *N (“asterisk”, then “n”) to deselect all email.
Select Yet on the toolbar. The icon stands for three stacked dots †
You can also press . to press † (period) to open the menu Yet †
Choose from the menu Mark all as read †
Or, while continuing to perform keyboard actions, press down and then Enter †
