Stop the automatic download of these images

Images that are automatically downloaded when you preview or open an email can pose a threat to your privacy. Some content may even compromise the security of your computer. Given the proliferation of viruses, scams, and other online threats, set Outlook to download images only from trusted senders. Better yet, retrieve deleted images manually.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, 2007, 2003; Outlook for Office 365 and Outlook for Mac.

How to prevent Outlook from downloading pictures automatically

Image email is nice to see in Outlook if it comes from legitimate sources. Newsletters that look like websites are not only more attractive, but also easier to read than their regular text counterparts. But these emails may contain unwanted content that could harm your computer or be too large for your computer.

Protect your privacy and your computer with a few easy steps.

For Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, and 2010

To prevent images from uploading in Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, and 2010:

  1. Select File parameters:

  2. In the dialog box Outlook options select Security Control Center

  3. In chapter Microsoft Outlook Trust Center select Trust Center Settings

  4. In the dialog box Security Control Center select Automatic download

  5. Check box Do not automatically download images in HTML emails or RSS feeds

  6. Check the box if you want. Allow downloads in email messages from senders and recipients defined in the safe senders and safe recipients lists used by the spam filter

The sender has not been verified. If someone uses an email address that is not theirs and is on your safe senders list, the images will be downloaded automatically.

  7. Check the box if you want. Allow downloading from websites in this security zone: Trusted zone

  8. Select Okay to close the dialog Security Control Center

  9. Select Okay to close the dialog Outlook options

For Outlook for Mac 2016

The process is slightly different for Outlook for Mac:

  1. Select Outlook Settings

  2. In chapter E-mail select Reading

  3. In chapter Safety select Never † Or choose In messages from my contacts to let Outlook for Mac download images in email messages from senders whose addresses are in your address book.

Forging an email address is easy. The sender uses your email address (listed in your address book) instead of the sender’s email address to trick Outlook for Mac into downloading a dangerous file.

  4. Close the settings window Reading
