It is very easy to prevent Skype from starting when you start your computer

By default, Skype opens automatically every time you start up your computer and sign in to your user account. This is so you can always get an instant notification when someone messages you or calls you.

However, you may not like the fact that Skype is always running – you may not want alerts to be always on, or your computer starts up too slowly when Skype is open at the same time. With just a few simple steps, you can prevent Skype from starting automatically on Windows or macOS.

When you disable Skype on startup, you have to open it manually the first time you want to use it after your computer boots up. Once opened, it will remain open as usual — and messages and calls may come in — until you exit or close it.

Windows: Sign out or change Skype autostart settings

Both Skype for Windows 10 and Windows 8 can be set to start automatically with Windows. However, depending on how you installed the program, the steps to disable the autorun feature may differ.

Skype app for Windows 10

If you’re a Windows 10 user who got the program from the Microsoft Store, technically you can’t disable Skype on startup. However, you can exit the program to close it and avoid all notifications.

To close the Skype app on Windows 10, do the following:

  1. Click on your profile picture in the top left corner.

  2. Click or tap Going out at the bottom of the popup.

  3. Skype will close automatically.

Usually when you leave Skype open and logged in, SkypeHost.exe And SkypeApp.exe works in task manager. When you close the application without logging out, SkypeHost.exe remains active so you can still receive notifications.

However, when you sign out of Skype on Windows 10, the process SkypeHost.exe close as well, so that you not only no longer receive notifications of messages and calls, but also closes the program.

Process SkypeHost.exe may restart when you log back into Windows after a reboot, but the program won’t log you in because you logged out the last time you used it.

Standard Skype program

If you have installed the stock Skype program on Windows 10 or Windows 8 (via Skype.com), open Skype settings to disable the autoplay feature.

Unlike the Windows 10 method above, which requires you to sign out, using these steps to disable Skype automatically will keep you signed in the next time you open the program.

  1. Click or tap the three-dot menu next to your name on the home page.

  2. Select Institutions

  3. Go to page General

  4. Switch Start Skype automatically to the off position (the button turns gray).

  5. Exit the settings screen.

macOS: Remove Skype from Login Items

There are several ways to disable autoplay for Skype on Mac. The first and easiest way is to do this from the Dock.

Another way to prevent Skype from opening automatically on macOS is to remove it from the Startup Items list in System Preferences. This method is useful not only for preventing Skype from opening automatically, but also for viewing and disabling other startup programs.
