Immunize Outlook against many email threats with this option

Rich HTML emails and newsletters contain elements that can be risky. These dangerous HTML messages may contain viruses or slow down your computer. These messages may also pose a privacy risk by contacting remote servers when the message is opened. Make reading Outlook email more secure and protect your privacy by reading only plain text messages.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, 2007, 2003; and Outlook for Office 365.

Read all email only in plain text in Outlook

To make all emails appear and appear as plain text in Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, and 2010:

  1. Go to the tab File and select parameters:

  2. In the dialog box Outlook options Select a category Security Control Center

  3. Select Trust Center Settings

  4. In the dialog box Security Control Center go to category Email Security

  5. In chapter Read in plain text Check the box Read all standard mail in plain text

  6. To read e-signed messages in plain text, select the checkbox Read all digitally signed plain text messages

  7. Select OKAY.

  8. In the dialog box Outlook options select Okay

Read a single message with Rich HTML Formatting

When Outlook is configured to display messages in plain text only, you can selectively choose which messages to read in HTML format.

  1. Select the message you want to read in HTML format. View the message in the reading pane or open the message in a separate window.

  2. Select We have converted this message to plain text.

  3. Select Display as HTML

Read all email only in plain text in Outlook 2007

To make Outlook 2007 display all messages in secure text format:

  1. Select Tools Security Control Center

  2. Go to page Email Security

  3. In chapter Read in plain text Check the box Read all regular emails in plain text and check the box Read all emails digitally signed in plain text checkbox.

  4. Select Okay

Read all email only in plain text in Outlook 2003

To make Outlook 2003 display all messages in secure text format:

  1. Select Tools parameters:

  2. Go to the tab Settings

  3. Select Email options

  4. Check box Read all regular emails in plain text and check the box Read all digitally signed emails in plain text

  5. Select OKAY.

  6. Select Okay
