Recover legitimate email from junk email folder in Outlook

Microsoft Outlook comes with a Junk E-mail Filter that stores junk e-mails in the Junk E-mail folder. However, good messages can be incorrectly marked as spam. It’s easy to browse your spam folder and recover missing messages in your inbox. By restoring the message, you teach Outlook’s spam filter a lesson about what good email looks like.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, 2007; Outlook for Office 365 and Outlook Online.

Recover email from junk email folder in Outlook

Move an email from your spam folder to your inbox and optionally protect future messages from the same sender from spam in Outlook:

  1. Open folder spam in Outlook.

  2. Open or highlight the email you want to recover.

  3. If the email is open in the reading pane or highlighted in the folder tree, click the House . If the message is open in a separate window, click the tab Message .

  4. In Group remove select mess .

  5. Select No spam . Or click on Ctrl+Alt+J .

  6. To add a sender to the safe senders list so that messages from their addresses are never considered spam, check the box Always trust email from .

    Set Outlook to only allow email from these senders in your inbox, and Outlook will automatically put the people you send email to in your safe senders list.

  7. Click Okay .

Outlook automatically moves the message to your inbox or previous message folder where you can read and work on it.

To recover a message in Outlook Online, select the message in the Junk E-mail folder, go to the toolbar and select No spam > No spam .

To mark a message as junk in Outlook’s Junk E-mail folder:

  1. Go to folder spam .

  2. Highlight the message you want to recover.

  3. Click No spam . Or click on Ctrl+Alt+J or select Actions > spam > Mark as not spam .

  4. To add the sender of the email to the trusted senders list, select Always trust email from .

  5. Click Okay .
