Track delivery of messages in different versions of Outlook

If you use Outlook in a workgroup environment and use Microsoft Exchange Server as your e-mail service, you can request receipts for messages you send. A receipt means your message has been delivered, but it doesn’t mean the recipient saw or opened the message.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, 2007; and Outlook for Office 365.

Request delivery notes in Outlook

In Outlook, you can set up the delivery receipt for an individual message, or you can request a receipt for each message you send.

For Outlook 2019, 2016 and 2013

To track the delivery of a single message:

  1. Compose a new message.

  2. Go to the tab parameters: and check the box Request delivery .

  3. To find out if the recipient has read the email, check the box. Request a check .

  4. Send a message.

To track receipts for all messages:

  1. Go to the tab File and select parameters: .

  2. Select mail .

  3. In chapter To follow Check the box Delivery, confirmation that the message has been delivered to the recipient’s mail server , .

  4. Check the box to request a read receipt A read read confirmation that the recipient has viewed the message .

    Recipients can choose to send a read receipt or not. Seeing this request on every message makes them less likely to send a read check.

  5. Select Okay to close the dialog Outlook options .

  6. Go to the map to see the comments Sent and open the original message in a separate window. Go to the tab Message and in the group Show select To follow .

For Outlook 2010

To follow a single message:

  1. Go to the tab parameters: .

  2. In Group To follow select Request for a receipt or Request a read receipt .

To request standard receipts for all messages:

  1. Select tab File .

  2. Select parameters: .

  3. Select mail .

  4. In chapter To follow select Receipt confirming that the message has been delivered to the recipient’s mail server .

For Outlook 2007

To have Outlook 2007 request a receipt for a message you are composing:

  1. Go to the tab parameters: on the message feed toolbar.

  2. Check box Request for a receipt .

  3. Check box Request a read receipt to receive a read receipt when the message is opened, rather than delivered.
