Any metal screw, once screwed in, cuts a thread in the wood. In this case, the metal inevitably wears on the fibers of the wood, and if you find that you have screwed the screw in the wrong place, you will have to unscrew the screw carefully and screw it back. In this case, the usual structure of the furniture can be violated. And you will be surprised to find that the screw has a play in the thread. For lightly loaded and rarely used headphone items, this clearance can be neglected. But any kitchen door will be at risk. It is therefore better to arm yourself with the three most effective methods for handling screws.

Method number 1 – Matches

So we found that the screw was loose in the hole. Carefully unscrew it with a flat or Phillips screwdriver to minimize further damage and take a box of regular kitchen matches. We select a stronger match, break off the head and carefully drive the rest of the dowel into the hole to the left of the screw.

Don’t be shy and try to drive the soft aspen, from which matches are traditionally made, completely into the funnel on the first attempt to drive the screw. Matchwood will fill the hole and partially replace the old wooden structure.

This is suitable for all types of wood products that are little used and subject to low physical stress.

Method number 2 – Glue and sawdust

Using silicate or PVC glue, you can try to completely restore the structure of the tree in place of the old hole. The main thing is to thoroughly mix the glue with a handful of small sawdust. Due to the structure of particleboard or MDF, this will help maximize the adhesion of the glued piece to the rest of the solid wood.

Thus, it is better to take PVA glue, Moment glue or, in the most ideal case, carpentry glue (not recommended, since the preparation is long and the minimum volume will be much larger than the volume total of any group of holes).

Superglue is also not recommended, as the cyanoacrylate will begin to air dry faster than you can place the adhesive emulsion in the hole.

Gently grind a piece of wood (for example, part of a pencil), mix it into a creamy slurry with the selected glue and carefully fill the hole, pushing the solution with an ordinary match.

We are waiting for the complete drying, and that’s it, the seat for the screw is ready! So you can perfectly restore any furniture door, cabinet, bookcase, even if they are made of natural wood, for painting. By the way, leave a small piece of liquid porridge in case, suddenly after drying it turns out that the first attempt has shrunk.

Method number 3 – Thread on a screw

As a palliative, you can simply take a screw of a larger size and diameter. But if the size is calculated accurately and the diameter of the screw is already drilled, there is a way to increase the diameter without increasing the size.

To do this, carefully wrap a soft, not very thick wire on the thread of the screw itself. Unlike hammering a baguette match, an extra layer of metal will strengthen the screw in the hole much better.

Note that you will choose the method of winding in place, depending on the thread pitch of the screw and the nature of the hole already drilled.
The method is convenient in that it is quick, does not require waiting, and effectively strengthens the position of the screw, compensating for the gap in the hole.

But there is also a minus – the method is suitable only for minor damage to the furniture structure and is completely unsuitable for a crumbled and partially destroyed hole.

Inspect the hole, determine the degree of damage and the choice is yours!
