Want to protect your Outlook.com account? Enable two-step verification

To protect your Outlook.com account, start with a strong password. Then add two-step verification as the second login method. When you sign up with 2-Step Verification, you’ll receive a generated code in a text message on your phone, email, or authenticator app. Generate application-specific passwords to take advantage of the flexibility of POP and IMAP access in email programs.

The instructions in this article apply to Outlook.com and Outlook Online.

Protect your Outlook.com account with two-step verification

To set up 2-Step Verification on your Outlook.com (and Microsoft) account:

  1. Select your name or picture in the top right corner of the window.

  2. Select My bill

  3. Enter your password when prompted and select Enter

  4. Select from the top navigation menu Safety

  5. Select Additional security options

  6. On screen Help us protect your account select drop-down arrow What security information do you want to add and choose phone number or alternative e-mailadress

  7. if you chose phone number Enter your phone number and choose Text or telephone conversation † if you chose alternative e-mailadress enter an email address (not your Outlook.com address).

  8. Select Further

  9. Enter the code you received and then select Further

  10. Enter your password when prompted, then select Enter

  11. In chapter Two-step verification select Set up two-step verification

  12. Select Further

  13. Select arrow Verify your identity with and choose Appendix phone number or alternative e-mailadress

  14. The rest of the two-step verification process depends on the method you chose in step 13. See the respective sections below for instructions on each of these three methods.

Use the app to get Outlook.com login verification codes

To verify your identity with the Microsoft Authenticator app:

  1. Select profit now

  2. On the Microsoft Authenticator webpage, select your country, enter the phone number for your smartphone, and select Send link

  3. When you receive the link on your smartphone, install the app and then log in to the app.

  4. Click the plus sign () to add your account. Select Personal account Work or school account or Another account (Google, Facebook, etc.)

  5. Sign in with your Outlook.com username and password.

    If prompted, enter the code sent in the email or text message.

  6. Return to Outlook.com and select Further

  7. Select Finished

  8. Your Outlook.com email has two-step verification enabled.

Use your phone number to get Outlook.com login verification codes

To verify your identity with: phone numbers:

  1. Enter your phone number and select Text or telephone conversation

  2. Once you have received the code on your phone, enter the code and select Further

  3. You will receive a confirmation with a recovery code. Print or save this code, then select Further

  4. Select Further † Or choose to sync your Outlook.com email on your Android phone, iPhone, or Blackberry.

  5. Select Finished

Use an alternate email address to receive Outlook.com login verification codes

To verify your identity with an alternate email address:

  1. Select Further

  2. After you receive the code by email from Microsoft, enter the code and select Further

  3. You will receive a confirmation with a recovery code. Print or save this code, then select Further

  4. Select Further † Or choose to sync your Outlook.com email on your Android phone, iPhone, or Blackberry.

  5. Select Finished
