The process is quite simple for most devices

Skype is becoming more and more common as a way to communicate with others. As convenient as it is, it’s never a better idea to use an older version of an app when a newer one is available. This guide explains how to update Skype and provides tips for updating Skype for Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android.

How to Update Skype on Mac

Updating Skype on your Mac is very easy. Here’s how to upgrade Skype for the most recent versions of macOS (i.e. Yosemite to High Sierra):

  1. Run skype app

  2. Press the button Skype on the left side of the Mac menu bar.

  3. Click Check for updates

In most cases, you will see a new window that says “You are using the latest version of Skype”. This means that there is no need to update.

However, if you don’t have the latest version, you’ll be told a newer version of Skype is available. In this case, you must press . click To download to start the update process.

How to Update Skype on Windows

The process is almost identical to Skype for Windows, except for differences in the exact menu bar and button used. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Run skype app

  2. Press the button reference on the right side of the Skype menu bar.

  3. Select Manually checking for updates

Again, you will be told “You are using the latest version of Skype” if no update is required. If you were told “There is a new version of Skype available”, you should also select To download to start the update.

Remark † On Skype for Windows (and also for Mac), you don’t need to do this process, as the application is usually set to update automatically. However, this feature can be disabled (see the section below) so that you can update it manually.

How to Update Skype on iPhone and Android

To update Skype on your iPhone, you need to do the following:

  1. Open the Apple app App Store

  2. Click Updates (in the lower left corner of the screen).

  3. Scroll down to check if it’s available Skype update

  4. If an update is available, click UPDATING (the picture above shows OPEN because the app is already updated)

An alternative way to check if your iPhone has the latest version of Skype:

  1. Run skype app

  2. Click on your profile picture at the top of the screen

  3. Scroll down to About the program where you can click to see which version of Skype you have. Comparing your version to the latest version will tell you if you need to launch the App Store to install the update.

When it comes to updating Skype for Android, it requires a process similar to updating for iPhone.

  1. Open the app Google Play Store

  2. Press the button Yet on the left side of the screen.

  3. Click My apps

  4. Scroll down to to Skype, and then click it.

  5. Click Updating

Remark : Step 5 is not possible if you have already installed the latest version. However, it’s worth checking every month or so for a new version.

Update Skype via automatic update

It should be noted again that you do not need to update Skype yourself; for Mac and Windows, Skype is automatically updated. However, you can turn off automatic updates if you’re so inclined, and you can turn them back on if you lack the convenience of not having to think about whether you’re using the latest version.

To enable or disable automatic updates from Skype for Mac, do the following:

  1. Run System settings

  2. Open Settings App Store

  3. Uncheck the box Install app updates † Check it again to turn automatic updates back on.

Remark † This will disable auto-update for all applications on your Mac, so it’s not a good idea if for some reason you don’t like auto-update via Skype.

And here’s how to enable or disable Skype for Windows automatic updates:

  1. Run skype app

  2. Select instruments in the Skype menu bar.

  3. Select parameters:

  4. Select Additionally extra options Disable automatic updates

  5. Select Save

You can turn auto-update back on by following the exact same process, except this time you choose Enable automatic updates
