Create a diagram in Google Docs for the web, Android and iOS devices

Long documents can be difficult to navigate in Google Docs. It is possible to scroll two or three pages of a document, but if your document is tens or even hundreds of pages long, you may be spending too much time jumping from one part of the document to another.

There is also the problem of finding what you need in your document. Simply put, without the use of a tool, managing lengthy documents can be difficult.

Google Docs has a feature called the Outline Tool that allows you to quickly navigate through a document and find the sections you need.

Finding the Google Docs overview tool

When working with Google Docs on the web, you should start with an open document. It can be a new or an existing document. Then to open the overview tool, do the following:

  1. Open the menu Vision

  2. Select Show document overview

  3. You can also use keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+Alt+A or Ctrl+Alt+H

Once you enable the outline tool, the outline for your document will appear in the left document pane.

If you’re using an Android or iOS device, tap . to enable a document overview Lake (menu three-point in the top right corner) and select Document structure † The outline appears at the bottom of the screen.

To disable Document Overview for the web, click X in the upper-right corner of the Outline tool. On Android or iOS, tap anywhere outside the outline to hide it, or repeat the steps above to disable the outline.

How to Outline Google Docs

Once you enable the Outline tool, it is easy to create or add an outline for a document.

In Google Docs for the web:

  1. For new documents, make one line of bold or underlined text to automatically add a title to the chart.

  2. For existing documents, format a single line of text with bold or underlined formatting, or use the format menu to select a heading option.

    To create levels in your outline, format the headings using the Format menu to designate the headings as “Heading 1”, “Heading 2”, “Heading 3” or “Heading 4”. is displayed in the outline, the subtitle is not.

  3. You will see your outline begin to take shape in the Outline panel on the left side of the document.

On Android or iOS:

  1. For new documents, make one line of bold or underlined text to automatically add a title to the chart.

  2. For existing documents, format a single line of text with bold or underlined formatting, or use the format menu to select a heading option.

    To format the headings to be assigned to the assigned levels in the overview, click Format Text Style and then select the desired price level. Also, while the title will be displayed in general terms, the subtitles will not.

  3. Your summary is displayed at the bottom of the screen.

After you create an outline in your Google Docs document, you can easily navigate through your document using the outline. On the web, click on the section of the schedule you want to access and the cursor will move to the beginning of that section.

On Android and iOS devices, open a chart and tap where you want to go in the chart. Alternatively, if the outline is enabled but hidden and you start scrolling through the document, a slider with two arrows will appear on the right side of the document. Touch to open the outline, then select the plan location you want to go to. As with the other methods, your cursor is at the beginning of this section.
